Geologists do not understand Comet impacts. Comets are dirty snowballs, mostly water ice. The bigger they are, the longer it takes to thaw. Say there was a comet 300 miles in diameter traveling in earth orbit. Earth moves around 18 miles per second, so it would be going about that same speed. It would warm up a little going through the atmosphere, but not enough to melt it clear through. The outer most part may turn to steam, but by impact time it would still be mostly water as happened in Uzbekistan. hydrogen-future.com/en/news-en/93-stone-chimneys-of-the-kyzylkum-desert.html

Earth is also spinning on its axis about 1040 MPH when you are at the equator. But at the poles it takes all day just to turn around once.
