My phone went wacko and I got an upgrade since I had insurance and I couldn't supply the model I had. Long story short, I went from a pixel 6 pro to a pixel 8 pro. So far the camera on this new phone has been absolutely incredible. This first picture is when my wife just took out in the backyard of some lavender with bees on it. Nothing has been retouched The macro is very impressive. I can focus from a half an inch or less. Both these cab pictures were just taken without zooming in. There's no cropping on either one of them.

Interesting. My phone is also currently going wacko. I’m hanging on as long as possible. Had a few days where it was completely unreliable. Even bought myself a cheap month to month back up phone for if it dies when I really need it and to span the gap to getting a new phone. I’ve had to change how my photos are stored, finally resorting to using iCloud. Which, by the way, does reduce the file quality even though it says it doesn’t. You have to convert back from Apples HEIC to jpeg in order to ever actually use, send, or post a photo and in doing this conversion, the photo appearance changes, most notable the colors. The last pics I’ve uploaded on here are notably lower in quality and color than any I’ve previously uploaded. It’s annoying to have something working just fine and then have to come up with a new method just because of built in obsolescence by the tech Gods. So…. I too will be shopping soon. I’m not too keen on the idea of learning a whole new operating system. And I’ve come to really depend on a good camera within my phone. Your pics look nice. I see the pixel comment but what phone did you end up getting?

Mine started going on the fritz on the first day of the 3-day sale. I did a couple weekends ago. I was depending on it to take credit cards. My wife had to drive an hour and 20 minutes to bring me her phone. The flashlight was on and music was playing and I could not get a screen to come on to change anything. Could not turn it off. All I could do was try and let it go dead. About an hour after my wife arrived with the other phone, it fell out of my pocket onto the concrete bathroom floor. I noticed the light was off and at that point it was working again for a while. The internet was in Spanish and my music ID app was in Thai. A short time later I could not use the internet.

I see the pixel comment but what phone did you end up getting? While you are correct that there are conversion losses in going from HEIC to JPEG, I'm a bit surprised by your iCloud experiences there. Apple is correct, you should not have to endure any quality loss; the original HEIC files are backed up if you have iCloud Photos backup enabled on your iPhone. I'm guessing your phone storage is full and you've turned on "optimize iPhone storage" in your iCloud Photos settings? That would also explain the erratic behavior if you've completely filled up your storage. If that's not it I'm curious what changes you are describing khara.

iamchris Nope. I’ve not got optimized storage turned on. I spent several hours the other night playing with my pictures and checking my settings. I did some test examples on my screen. HEIC version on one side, converted to jpeg on the other. The colors change, and quite a bit. To where a cab looks good and then it just looks dull. I even had someone else come and watch the conversion and look at the results and he agreed. I used two different methods to convert and both resulted the same. The new photos are degraded. Now, about a month ago I reluctantly turned on my iCloud photos storage. I was previously still doing the old school method of manually copying my photos from my phone to my computer. This method always resulted in what I felt were nice looking high quality pics that looked the same on my phone as on my computer. There was no HEIC conversion, it was just drag and drop and the file was a jpeg. Because I don’t have the admin time to keep up with this and not wanting to lose photos should my phone finally die, I resorted to turning on iCloud photos and immediately noticed the color/quality issue. At this point I’ve lost way too much time on this issue. I used to have a good photo method and now I don’t. Such is our way of life now. We are slaves to tech. Remember when we just lived? How many hours, amounting to days of our lives, how many experiences are we losing, because we are screwing around troubleshooting our tech?
