I am just guessing banded chert with some soft limestoneish stuff between the layers. But not an expert.

That is pretty cool whatever it is. Next level pet wood.

How magnetic is it? It doesn’t look metallic in the photos. If there are metallic zones, a streak test might help identify it.

It's a lovely rock for sure. Can I ask what BIF means?

Very nice! Thinking it’s a beautiful piece of petrified wood or banded chert. I’m learning more towards petrified wood, I’ve found similar here in Texas, some that’s also magnetic just not as strong as you’re saying yours is. It’s a beautiful piece for sure. The more I look at it the more I’m seeing some kind of burl wood or knot or root ball. Man, I also see banded chert. But it is intense compared to what I found here in Texas.

It's a lovely rock for sure. Can I ask what BIF means? Banded Iron Formation. I should have figured that out but had to look it up.

Now that I know what BIF is, how did you get it to stand up like that for the first picture?

Wow, that is huge piece of very spectacular. I'd say that the metallic part is magnetite. I love that you can see the flow of minerals forming the bands. I'd cut some slabs with that one. Nice photos too. That's a lot for sharing that beauty.

The photo with the ruler and the photo below that make me think Stromatolite, but not sure how that fits with the magnetism. Other photos indicate banded iron. Is it exceptionally heavy? Would like to hear if you are able to positively identify.
