I am not quite ready to give up on this one completely, but it’s time to be more flexible with it! The way the receipt is written means that it came from a claim/site named “Bogg Wood” and the box is labeled “Boggs Wood”. Can’t find any info on that, sooooo…. Anything it’s similar enough to to just lump it in with a different name? Guesses on region it came from? I’m very noob at this, but am I looking at palm roots? It is driving me CRAZY that I have a frickin receipt and STILL can’t figure out anything about it!! Must’ve been a very small deposit that has long since been forgotten.

It could be a misspelling of "bog". So it is petrified bog wood. Meaning petrified wood that came out of a bog. Odd that the box is labeled "boggs wood". Maybe they meant wood that came from bogs and they just copied the misspelling from the receipt

If you look at the item above the petrified wood… the thundereggs came from friends ranch. Makes the most sense that the petrified wood uses the same format: type of item -source site-. With both the receipt and the box using two g, seems to have been something specific. Giving up on finding the location, though! Now I just want to figure out what to call it in “modern” terms (rough was purchased in 1982). I know nothing about petrified wood… is this something that needs to be cut to have any idea what it is? To my inexperienced eyes the most similar I’ve seen online is palm roots from the lonely butte area, but I don’t know ANYTHING about petrified wood 🤣

cabby - i saw that one too when I was attempting to look for boggs wood location the other day. I found a few claims named boggs (nevada, washington) and a pinterest of the "boggs wood" nevada. Not much help otherwise. There was a Boggs wood in the UK as well, not a mining location though.

Haha thanks for trying to look as well! Hubby went deep down the rabbit hole looking into families named “Bogg” that have mining claims but couldn’t find a match. Between the receipt and that one Etsy listing I am SURE it’s the name of a place, but it’s either some type of protected land or a very localized name. I’m assuming it’s somewhere in Nevada but have no idea what part of the state to find something similar!

I think you should message that person on Etsy and ask her. It won't hurt, right?

I found the ad that this material was ordered from in lapidary journal dec 1981. Still doesn’t help me know the location! Finally giving up on figuring out where this darn stuff is from… notice that like the receipt and box, the ad also says “bogg” and it is distinct from the other pet woods.

There is a wood collecting site on the Friends ranch, went there on a field trip from the Madras show years ago. No idea if this came from there, perhaps realrockhound has some insight?

The colors look a lot like saddle mountain, to me, and apparently that used to be well known for bog wood. This shop was advertising saddle mountain pet wood in other issues, which don’t have bogg wood. The majority of their ads seem to be Washington material… does saddle mountain bog wood sound right to anyone?

There is some bog in that area closer to George, WA. Yes there is a George, and it's near the gorge...
