I wouldn't consider that stuff orbing or orbs. If its some odd ball piece that has orbs like Luna agate or Ocean jasper, then I would agree. I want to be flexible so everyone can participate, but would still like to stick to predominantly orbs or orbing if that makes sense?
Definitely. What I felt was there should still be enough crazy laces and bots that produce some areas of perfect orbs for cabochons. Not those random fortifications.
I see what you mean. Gobi agate is a great example of material that has orbs and fortifications.
realrockhound There’s a trend on IG, well, I’ve seen a couple jewelry makers doing this, where they balance their pieces on their dogs heads or noses or paws. It’s actually pretty cute. It may help you get votes, if your cab is subpar 🐶🤓, though I don’t really see anything wrong with that one, except for a couple micro fractures maybe?

Its just the fractures and the orbing isnt up to par with how I anticipated it shaping out. I really want to use some material that most arent familiar with. But might have to go down in the cellar and go nuclear option.
You can show us the nuclear options but don't use them
I hate having to cut stuff my grandpa left me. But the overly competitive side of me also likes winning. You can only back a dog into a corner and kick it for so long before it bites haha.
I have a couple of (not sure how traditional/typical) orbs material that I can send out to one who wants to participate but don't have orbs to work on, for the purpose of this contest, US shipping address only. You can send me a message if you are interested.

I'm submitting my entry for July's theme, orbs. This is a Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper (MHPJ) that I probably purchased at a rock and gem show, I don't remember where or when though. The slab was pretty thin so I made a doublet backing it with Montana agate. I didn't have a clear piece so I used the amber color and you can still see through it.
A few preform photos:
Front view: MHPJ has always given me trouble, see the two huge fractures and the polish is subpar.

Back view:
Thanks for looking.

Just to make things interesting and hopefully attract more entrants, I'm rolling over my gift certificate from last month to this contest. And yes, it's been discussed with the boss...Tommy. 😁

I’ve yet to use mine. Should we go triple or nothing? 😂

I like that. Really like the shape. I’m stealing that.
Great cab dshanpnw ! Sorry to see you ended up with fractures.😕 What do you like to use for your doublets? I have a number of thin slabs that I just keep putting back in the bins because I’m not sure what glue to trust.
khara I have always used Hughes 330 jewelers epoxy, but have got some expired stuff that didn't cure a couple times, so I tried something from Amazon that has worked good so far. At any rate, I now mix a small sacrificial batch when I start doing glue ups and make sure it hardens first. Mating surfaces should be flat, placing cap and slab on the already wet flat lap, starting the lap, and NOT moving the slab back and forth will work best for this. Once saw marks are gone and it's flat, 80 or 100 grit is fine, the epoxy will fill any scratches. I clean with alcohol. To deal with bubbles, don't lift the stir stick from the epoxy while mixing to avoid introducing air as much as possible, and after it is applied to the piece that you're capping, wave a butane lighter flame over it, makes bubbles rise and pop. When putting on the cap, lay it in place like you close a book, so everything, including potential air bubbles, is pushed across and squirts out one side. I use mylar coffee bags or similar to mix epoxy on and cure cabs on.
