Last week while consolidating from the statement for my business checking account we came across several withdrawals that we could not identify. I went to the bank and we quickly determined that they were done by someone that was not authorized to do so. They were all for paying off credit cards or credit purchases. They had a name associated with each one. Most if not all the names had multiple withdrawals, some on the same day. They pulled out a decent amount of money. It was into 5 figures. I've had this happen a few times with our personal credit union account but never my business. I don't know if it's because it's a small local credit union but they have always caught it before us. We've been reimbursed for everything. My business account had the money back in it within a few minutes of talking to the fraud people. It's still a pain as all the auto payments have to be redone and I'm waiting on checks for 2 weeks for the new account. This seems to be getting more and more prevalent, and the fact that we've had it happen to us multiple times is just ridiculous. What I'm really curious about is if they even go after the people that are responsible.

Wow, how horrible! I am glad that you were able to get it fixed quickly. I havenāt had a problem with my current credit union, but at my old one there were an unauthorized withdrawals and purchases starting within an hour of opening the account! We were pretty shocked to log in when we got home from the bank and find that the initial deposit was already gone. At the time I suspected it was an employee within the branch that did it, since it was apparently debit card transactions, but now I am wondering if small credit unions contracting with a less than secure service for things.

I'm glad to hear your bank took care of you. Those kinds of thieves don't ever seem to be caught either.

I had some things like that going on a few years ago and at the time I had numerous accounts and credit cards. I got sick of it and decided to just use some low tech to stop it, so I closed every account except one.
This didn't hamper my life too much because I use cash as much as possible for personal expenses. It made monitoring my account easy because my purchase activity has a predictable pattern where deviations are easily flagged.
I did the same thing with the business, and it wasn't too hard because large transactions in my line of work are customarily handled by wiring money.
Haven't had a single issue since.

Glad you got your money back. I haven't had that issue with the credit union I belong to. Knock on wood.

We got back 9 grand from our bank a few years ago after we had the same thing happen. They never were able to figure out where it went.

There are so many POS's out there...so many people trying to steal from anyone and everyone. I see too many times where POS's lie, cheat, and steal...with no consequences...no remorse...no ethics...no morality...
Sorry you had to deal with this...but glad your bank took care of the missing funds...

The first time we had the issue with our Credit Union they called because of unusual activity. Someone had spent a pretty healthy sum at a gentlemen's club in Germany. Glad it was Europe. I had a failsafe alibi!

We had one on our credit card just last month. This after a really long time, several years, with no issues, thankfully. We have text alerts set for ANY amount of money at all being spent on all of our accounts. If I hear it alert and Iām not still standing with a cashier, or checking out online, then itās a problem. We caught it instantly. I was actually at the local rock clubās meeting talking to a friend, heard the alert, glanced at my phone, finished the conversation, then went home and called the bank. It was stopped within minutes. The frustrating thing is the customer service people never give you a clue as to how this is being done. The particular card that was hacked is never used out and about, restaurants, groceries, gas stations, etc, it has not been handed over or scanned, in years. We are positive about this because we changed how and what accounts we use for various things. So we ask the rep, HOW is our info being stolen?? If we knew how it seems we could protect it better. I always got the feeling they knew how and wouldnāt tell us, like we are going to go out and start doing it too! Anyway, they refunded the one charge, $138 for sushi two states over, cancelled the card, and sent us a new one, and we are left wondering how to prevent it again.š¤·āāļø

It is sorry to hear about the problems others we are experiencing with credit cards and credit union accounts. I had my Costco Visa Executive card somehow skimmed about 5 years ago. We had no clue until we received a call about 9 pm where a Visa official called about a potential charge for $1 in a convenience store in another state. The card was immediately frozen but I still don't have a clue as to where the card was copied.

Theft should be punishable by hacking hands off. Would be a lot of one handed people walking around š

I work for a company that supplies software and customer service for credit unions and banks. I work the credit union side and get calls like this ALL the time! It is absurd the amount of fraud and the ways it is committed. It is unending. Agreed with Jason about the type of people they are! They do investigate things but it is hard to track things down this day and age.

Oh the irony!! As soon I wrote that last night someone hacks my card! I have been with USAA bank since getting out of the army 14 years ago and have never had any fraud on there until last night. Its a very sad world we live in these days, people really are scum.

F-it. I think Iām just going to go back to cash. I actually did for the most part. I also did it because I don't like anyone tracking my purchase activity even though it's probably very boring and mundane. It doesn't bother me at all to carry a lot of cash around, but that is more of a personality issue and might not be for everyone. I got one of those RFID blocking wallets and haven't been skimmed since.

I work at a bank and unfortunately this happens all the time, even with people's debit cards. Fraudsters are now sending out texts with our bank's name to customers and non-customers alike. Most people are smart enough not to click on the link but to the POS's it's a pure numbers game. If they can find a few people a day to fall for their BS, then it's a good day for them. Unfortunately, it's the honest people that pay the price.
