As some of you may or may not know I travel the country with my husband for his job as a power lineman. We've been all over but in CA for the past...like 5 years or so. Recently he took a higher up position in a little slice of heaven by the name of Carmel by the Sea, CA. The weather is perfect! Everything is perfect! Just arrived a week ago so haven't found my hotspot(for rockhounding) but I'm excited to start!
Anyone in the area? Will post pics soon.

Think there is a beach up in that area called "Agate Beach". Beach has chalcedonies.

Wow! You're in a beautiful spot. We were just over there for my wife's birthday the beginning of last month. I took her to one of her favorite restaurants Little Napoli in Carmel. We're about 2 hours east of you. You've got Jade Cove a bit to your south. It can be an adventure to get down to the water. The trail is not for the faint of heart. I think it's also getting a lot harder to find jade there. Lots of serpentine that gets mistaken for Jade. Unfortunately I think Highway 1 is still closed down right now. There are a lot of great rockhounding beaches to your south. Picking up rocks around the San Simeon, Moonstone Beach, Morro Rock area is what got me into this hobby. There are some beaches between you and the closure that probably have some good potential but I've just never done much up that way and can't speak from personal experience. Lots of beautiful jaspers, agates, chalcedony etc. I will say that a lot of the beaches I'm talking about hounding is weather dependent. I've been to beaches that were covered with stones and gone back at a different time and they were all sand. The best I've done is during a storm but watch out for rogue waves! Right after a big storm is usually good. You're also coming up on my favorite time of year to be over that way. I think November is one of the best months to visit. Beautiful weather, very little fog and the crowds are way down. If you drive down 1 and don't find good hounding beaches the trip has not been wasted. It's a magnificent area. Up just a bit north of you the Santa Cruz area has lots of fossils and whale bone.
