Hi all. After seeing Shain's and Tony's posts of the knives they made, I decided to try one myself. I had just gotten a box full of slabs and some of the larger slabs were obsidian(like about 8"x6"). So I used that for the blade and I had some slabs of Kim's yellow jasper sitting by the grinder and used that for the handle. I wish I could capture the sheen of the obsidian a little better in the pics cuz it's really some nice obsidian Anyway, here's my version of a stone knife. Here is a little bit of the sheen in the blade It was a lot of fun and I'm sure I'll be doing another one of these soon. Thanks for looking

oohhhhh cool!!! is the blade actually sharp? being obsidian, that would be cool if it was sharp. and if you were good at knapping, you could maybe even create little serrations on the edge of the blade. i can just see someone cutting up steak at dinner with that thing!

Thanks guys. Joe, after letting the glue set, it took me about 1 1/2 hours to do the shaping and polishing. I think if I were to do more, I could get it down to under an hour. ski33, the blade is fairly sharp, but not as sharp as a jagged edge of obsidian. A knapped edge would be cool, but I haven't tried that-yet.

I'd be scared to cut something with that, in case some of the blade came off in the food - wonderful job! I like the contrast between the blade & handle
I second that "WOW"

Once again the talent and craftsmanship of RTH members comes shining through. Very nice, Ed. And a terrific choice of stones.

Thanks everyone. Tweetie, I don't think I would use it for food either. I plan on making a nice wooden box for it and keep it for a display piece. Zotika, go for it. It's not much different than grinding and shaping a cab. I have to credit to Shain for planting the seed in my head. Now that I've done this one, the next one will be easier and more fancy.

Holly jamicamecrazy!!! That is way too nice Ed. If you dont mind, i would love to put a couple photos of that on the how to make a stone knife page. It really is easy isnt it? if you worked big cabs before, you can do it no problem. I like the color contrast too! and can see the sheen, way nice. www.stoneagetradingco.com/videos.html#flake (Flake over Grinding) video looks to be a good sorce to learn how to get that napped edge on something you shaped. I will get it myself soon. I love it, so glad to see more cool creations.

Thanks shain. Actually, as I was shaping it, it reminded me of similar items I've made out of wood in the past. The big difference being the stone is much harder to work with, but the principal is the same. I'll send the pics in an email.

I think that is a really good color combination. It looks great and almost has me tempted to try it. You surely did a fine job on that piece and I'm certain there are better ones to follow. Nice piece of artwork there!

Thanks banjo, always nice to hear from you. You should make one and I'm sure you would do an excellent job on it too. Post some pics if you do.
