Hi all. Does anybody know what type of cutters/grinders are used to put a decorative edge on something like a marble or granite slab? And if so, where one might be able to purchase them? I finally started a new job today(oh boy, money for a digital camera) and of course, somehow the subject of rocks came up. It turns out the owner of the shop went to Indonesia last month and is going to start importing a variety of slabbed material for making counter tops and table tops. He also just recently formed a partnership with an up-and-coming Luthier. Boy, did I luck out getting this job-woodworking, guitar making, and working with slabs of rock! Anyway, if anyone has any info, I would really appreciate it.

Great to hear that you found a "dream" job. I guess no more coming over on my lunch break!

We have a company here in town that makes granet or marble tops. He let me check out his shop and what they use to put a round (bull nose) edge of other type of edges is a router that runs with water . When they polished the slab they used a hand held power sander hooked to H2O and started down sizing the grit. When the polished it he uses tin oxide on leather and uses spit. He says he has always gotten a better shine with spit. I thought to myself if I ever buy anything from him im going to wash it first. Nice ole' spit shine!

Congratulations on the job, Ed! Sounds like a really terrific combination of activities you will be involved with.
Creating things using wood and rocks together is one of my main goals.
Good luck with the new job!

Hi all. Thanks for the support. It's been many years since I went without work for as long as I did this time(8mos.), and it's been tough getting back into the old grind. But at least I've got a fun job to provide the incentive.
Cal-unless something goes sour with this job, it'll have to be weekends or after work(I get home 4:30-5:00). By the way, is that your ad in the paper-"Wanted, Lapidary Grinder"? It has a phone # with an 831 area code.
Thanks for the links everyone, I'll check them out when I'm not so dang tired.
Rocky, I forgot that you and your husband are in the tile business. Thanks for the links and the offer to bug folks. Shoot, my daughter practically runs Morgan Hill Tile, I didn't even think to bug her.
Well, I'm gonna go dream about rocks.
See Ya, Ed

Hi Ed,
Right area code, but it wasn't my ad. But, one of these days... I'll get a grinder.
If you got your saw all tuned up, I have a 9" by 9"by 8" piece of autumn jasper to test out on your saw! It won't fit into my tumbler.

Hi all. For Cal and Cookie and anyone else who was wondering, a luthier is a guitar maker. Don't ask me about the origin of the name, cuz I haven't the foggiest idea. Cal, I haven't had time to finish putting my saw back together yet, but let's shoot for sometime next week. I'll send you an IM when I'm ready.

Stoner, sounds like you found the perfect job! You lucky fella. Even though being out of work for 8 mos. was not easy, just look what you got for having to wait so long! A job that you will really enjoy. So much better than just having to take a job, any old job! If everybody could have a job they really enjoyed, the world would be a better place, IMHO!
As soon as you get that digital camera, we expect pictures! Of rocks, slabs, guitars, countertops!
