I slabbed some of the rainbow obsidian I picked up when I was in New Mexico today and man, I am one happy camper. This is the first time I've ever seen a rainbow in a rock. Check this stuff out. Broken end cut A slab And after seeing how nice it was, I just had to cut a cab. These photos don't do it justice at all. I'll have to experiment with the direction of cut to see if I can get even better color to show. I cut the slabs today at about 15 degrees off parallel with the flow lines.

Very nice rainbow!! Looks like you've already figured out how to cab it well to show off the rainbow too.
I've alway wondered about rainbow obsidian... does the rainbow only show up in sunlight, or can you also see it (even if muted) in a shaded area or indoors? -Don

Wow! That is sweet! The material I got recently is not as nice qualitywise but I'm hoping to get some of those colors in my cabs too. That's really pretty stuff!....mel

nice looking stuff, the slab is killer and obsidian is fun to work with, can churn out a lot of cabs working with obsidian - your cabs look great.

Wow what a beauty!!
Is obsidian easy to work with - I've always been a bit wary of it (not sure why). Makes me want to take the plunge and cut a bit up!

That's cool!! erbojones- Obsidian cuts and grinds very clean, I cut up a piece on my workforce saw and grinded it on a bench grinder. It shapes very easy too!

just be careful of chips, edges are as sharp as glass- because well, they are.
Especially on the workforce- you'll want to wear gloves when messing with obsidian, take it from me (who learned the hard way).
Once its shaped up though, it smooths and polishes really nice, and being softer then agates and Jaspers- it is a great candidate for working with Silicon Carbide as Randy mentioned.
Fantastic piece there Ed!

Man that's some nice stuff Ed! Great cab too! I read somewhere that Obsidian can be sharpened much sharper than a surgical scalpel ...to have an edge only a few molecules wide... Obsidian is so cool... lol.
