Howdy folks, Had me a little time to saw rocks again yesterday so I dug out some moss and plume from my waiting to be cut pile. Here are a few pics of some of the slabs I got. Thanks for looking....Mel This is a new one for me and the seller had only the one hunk. He was unsure of the spelling but told me it was Caryn (Karyn?) plume from Northern Mexico. Maybe a place name? Forms in sort of angelwing type veins. Nice material and I wish he had more in stock. Got this one from my Durango sellers. Sort of a pink plume/moss stuff. Very hard and solid. First slab almost stopped the saw. Lots more to cut if I can get through the hunk. And finally: This moss agate stopped my old blade, the MK Gem King, three times but the MK303 went through it pretty well. Kinda vuggy crystally material but nice color. This moss was self collected from the the gravel beds at the outflow of the Mojave River Gorge ( Afton Canyon) in the North Cady Mtns east of Barstow, CA.

Nice looking. Funny how some ot that stuff is so hard to cut. Sometimes I am surprised as to which rock cuts harder.........MrP

As usual Mel...some nice and unusual material. The 1st and last ones are killer. The last one kind of reminds me of Dino Bone. Steve

All of them look fantastic. I like that vuggy stuff a lot. It should make some great cabs (or great anything). That first one is wonderful. I can see why you wish the seller had more. Steve

Thanks for the comments folks. Strange story about that last moss agate. A buddy of mine actually found the vein it came from. We figured it must be big as most the good hunks we find are actually too big for our saws. My largest piece to date is 96 pounds and I have a couple more in the thirty pound range. The actual vein this guy "Jim" found is supposedly four feet thick and like a huge vein of mossy glass. So, we of course had to launch an expedition to mine the vein. Went out in the winter with four four-bys and made a drive down the gorge which required crossing the river in several places deep enough to almost float our trucks. We wound up with most of a gem club complete with kids etc. Jim said to make sure and bring hard rock mining tools for the vein so we loaded up with a freaking ton of heavy gear, water, food etc and headed off into the canyons. Well, long story short, the place is a maze with dead ends, hanging falls, steep talus slopes etc. We hiked for miles without finding even a chip of float and finally when we came to a steep gorge with no way down or across, Jim admitted he was totally lost. Then we had the pleasure of a long long hike back to the trucks lugging all our sledges, chisels etc. and dragging along a bunch of disgruntled kids which was oh so fun as I don't have any and don't even like them all that much *L*. So somewhere out there still is the "Lost Jim Mine" with four foot thick veins of beautiful moss/plume agate. I guess if it weren't difficult, it wouldn't be called "rock hunting" but damn what a disappointment!....Mel

Beautiful stuff you got there. It's a shame about the "Lost Mine"" Maybe Jim will come across it again some day.

Nice stuff, especially the last pic. Seems like the Lost Jim Mine is worth another search, maybe just with the serious searchers though. -Don

Wow! I love that red moss - real purdy mate! Enjoy
I remember "the one that got away" more than the one I banked and returned. (Fishing)
