I was absent again. It seems that this summer I'll be traveling a lot. Summer sea holiday with family was the reason for my absence this time. That is why I am posting pics, from my June trip to Letze volcanic complex, now. It was very hot summer doctoral thesis related field trip to Southeastern Serbia with my professor-mentor. Very tough but very interesting field trip. We managed to discover a couple totally new agate, chalcedony and jasper occurrences. Typical landscape. Lava flows. Andesite outcrops. Ex volcano. This is old stone grave with very interesting engraved cross. I have never seen cross like this. There is no record of origin of these stone graves but local folks call this area "Greek graveyard". Ordinary cross but completely unordinary setting. We didn't find anybody in this distant mountain village to ask for the purpose of this cross. One day we walked 10 km up hill just to find this. Road closed. They fenced hunting area and just closed public road without any notification. We couldn't go further. We just had to turn and walk back another 10km, at least, thist time downhill. That day was total disaster, because, later on, my car broke down. One of days when you should stay in bed. Velika Kosanica River. In this river alluvial placers many chalcedonies and jaspers could be found. This is how chalcedonies primary occur. Cracks formed in andesites are later on filled with silica minerals. Agate vein in andesite Close up Another agate outcrop Thanks for looking. Zoran P.S. Sorry for numerous pictures.

Zotika, First of all...no need to be sorry for posting the pics! you know we all love them. It looks like some beautiful country you live in. And it looks like you found some reallynice rocks. The deep red Jasper is amazing...but that Agate outcrop in the last pic is phenomenal. My favorite has to be the cross carving on the rock. Has anyone ever dated the carvings, or know the origins??? Glad you had a safe trip, and fun...even though the car and gated area gave you gripes. Steve

Thanks, Steve. I didn't find any records about origin of these graves but I'll keep searching. I'll let you know if I find anything. I am also interested in history. My assumption is that stone graves could be old Christian graves - maybe Byzantine.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful photos. What an exciting experience you are having while working towards your doctorate. The pix of the agates are spectacular. I can't identify stones and rock yet but that stone with the cross looks like one of the very old Cyrillic Armenian-Russian Orthdox crosses.
Thanks for sharing your trip with us.

Great scenery! The old graves are neat also. The second cross reminds me of a Catholic prayer bench. The rocks are great and I sure hope you carried a ton of that beautiful agate home with you.

Love all the pics. It's wonderful to be able to touch history. And what a wonderful vein of agate you found. Hope you got some of it, or all of it.

Zoran, I swear you post some of the neatest field trip pics I've ever seen. Not only is the countryside fantastic but it is so neat for us agate collectors to see the outcrops right as they occur in nature. That picture of the lacy agate in situ makes my mouth water! Thanks again for the neat report and please do keep them coming.....Mel

Thanks for a great virtual vacation! Beautiful pix, I thought it was a giant teddy bear on the roof of that building. Great rocks, too, of course.

I love seeing pictures of the country side in other parts of the world. That vein of agate is better that any lace I have seen here and is natural and still in the Earth and the old crosses or should I say ancient? Fantastic pictures. I want more. Many more. Thank you!!!!!

Don't apologise for such smashing photos - what an amazing place. That jasper is so bright! I nearly had to turn the monitor down and wow agates and lovely chalcedony! I'd need a reinforced backpack for that hike. Thanks!

I agree with Spike - no sorries needed! And keep posting the pics! For some of us, we may never get to see your side of the world - so we live vicariously through you! ;D Thanks so much for the pictures! I was also curious about the koala bear looking thing on that hut - was pretty sure it wasn't a koala bear but couldn't decide what it was...and if that's the size of your squirrels, I may stick to photos... Squirrels around campus here are about the size of your foot and will mug you for a potato chip if you don't watch your back. That vein of agate was awesome too - did you bring back any samples that we should be watching for in another post to this board? (hint hint)
