Hi Guys! Hot or not, every once in a while I gotta get my rock fix. This morning @ 5 AM, I headed out to hunt wood. I found some fragments lying on the dirt in front of a bank of mostly red clay. I started poking around in the bank and uncovered a small log about 16 inches long. Took me an hour and a half to get it out. ( Why is this stuff ALWAYS in the hardest, most compact, dirt around?) I was soaked in sweat and ready to head to the house by the time I finally got it out. There is more there, but it's going to have to wait for another time. Anyway, this wood is covered in a very nice golden colored druze. I have the big pieces in a bucket of acid to get all the red hematite out, so it'll be a few days before I can post pics. Here is a small sample of what it looks like. Thanks for looking! Curt

Man oh man that is very neat looking wood! Nothing like a bit of sparkle to really fancy up a specimen. Looks like you've found a great are for those kind of finds....Mel

First the black; now the golden! You really know how to make the rest of us turn green with envy don'tcha???!!!
I have some neat sand I'll trade ya! If you look at it from just the right angle it gets all shiny-sparkly and I'll bet it's a lot easier to dig through than that bank of red clay!
Beautiful sample...can't wait to drool over the larger specimen you found.

I'll take the trade if the sand comes with a girl in a teenie bikini.

You're the drusy wood-finding master, Curt! And you must have high standards, if you say a 16 inch log is small.
That golden drusy is gorgeous!
What kind of acid and concentration do you use?

Keep the rocks, Curt . . . you might get one of Edog's 'girlfriends' in that teenie bikini. ;D
I think we need a pic of that golden beauty next to the black one.

Susan All the big stuff around here has long been picked up. The big pieces as far as I know, you have to dig for. Yuck! Adrian !6 inches is pretty small for a log around here. I use Muriatic acid (hydrochloric) 50/50. I don't recommend this to everyone. I got it free so I use it, but it can be very dangerous. Rich.... Ya think?? ;D Brian Already found the blue. OWA Funny you should say that. I can almost feel it when petrified wood is in an area. There is a place near my house that has only iron ore type rocks, but I always get a funny feeling when driving through there. Somewhere out in those woods is some petrified wood I'm willing to bet. Thanks for the comments guys! Curt

Well, the wood has fractures that are filled with hematite, so when the acid dissolved the hematite, the log came into several pieces. This is the largest and has been cleaned, the rest are still in the acid bath. It's about 9 inches tall and 7 wide. I was messing around with my camera and found this weird feature. Don't have a clue what it's for. If anyone can enlighten me, please do so.
