As some of you know Joi and I took the boys to PA this weekend for them to spend 2 weeks with my Aunt. While there I got to go rockhounding at a local river. I also got to visit a small rock shop connected to a cavern. Sorry no pics of the cavern we decided not to take the tour. Spent our money on other stuff in the shop. ;D Sign for the river I went to. View from the Bridge View from the rock bed Rock bed and rapids another rock bed not a whole lot of rock for tumbling but i did find a few things. Have no idea what this is but it is very heavy Jasper? Jasper and quartzite? Here are some pics of what I got at the shop Bloodstone 1pound of slabbetts now for what really ate into the wallet. I am going to apologize to Ed right now. Sorry I couldn't help myself. Blue lace cab 30x22 Malachite cab 30x22 Malachite cab 25x18 now for the 2 that really hit the bank Rhodochrosite cab 25x18 Azurite and malachite cab 40x30 Thanks for looking. We are going back in 2 weeks. Man I gotta get some money before then!!

Looks like a great trip! The first pic looks to me like agate in matrix, but I'm sure someone will come along and tell you what it really is. ;D
That malachite is beautiful! I think that stuff is becoming my favorite non-wood rock.

The cabs are great but the river just looks so peaceful.

The cabs are great but the river just looks so peaceful. Have to agree with everyone about the beauty of the cabs, especially the last one. But I also had to laugh about the river looking peaceful. At this point it is but there are some falls and rapids that make it treacherous. And running alongside the river is an expressway which will take you into the heart of Philadelphia (my hometown!). On the maps it is called The Schuylkill Expressway but anyone who has ever had to drive/ride on it knows it by its much more appropriate moniker: The SURE KILL Expressway. It is notorious for all the traffic accidents and subsequent traffic jams that occur there almost daily. BTW, if anyone gets a chance to visit that area, you can see/visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art (think Rocky Balboa) which can be seen from the river, and Boathouse Row, an idyllic setting where crew boat racing is practiced (the many colleges and universities around Philly have boathouses there and you will often see 2-, 4-, and 8-man sculls out on the river.) Thanks for posting the pix of the cabs and the rocks, Jeremy, and thanks also for pix of "home". Lady B

That "heavy" piece looks to me a piece of dross from a steel mill (is there this sort of industry somewhere upstream?)
That blue lace cab is so nice, like a peaceful sky!

You were very close to where I live. Was the cavern Lost River Caverns? The shop there Gillman's is the only shop for quite a distance around here. Where exactly where you on the Schuylkill? The photos look more like the Lehigh River, which is about 5 minutes from lost river caverns.
The heavy piece looks like steel slab to me from the photo, but I thought that was heavier. The other finds are very nice. Nicer than anything I've found yet.
If you get up that way again P.M. me and maybe we could meet up somewhere. Tony M

Looks like you had some fun there Jeremy. Glad to see you had some time to spend with the boys out rockhounding. And hey, no reason to apologize, I don't have any rough malachite/Azurite! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ahhh... These pictures make me miss my local river. I haven't been able to hunt it this Summer because of all the rain we've had. Looks like you guys had some fun and picked up some cool stuff as well! That Azurite/Malachite cab is da bomb!!
Hard to tell from the pic but that 2nd rock might be some kind of moss agate... just guessing, like I said, kind of hard to see in the pic.
Thanks for the pics!! Dan
