Howdy folks, Boy I'm gonna have to strain my oil pretty soon as it's getting really heavy with sediment but I'm lazy and it['s a messy job so I'll keep cutting as long as I can *S*. Anyway, here are a few of todays cuts. Thanks for looking....Mel Turned my leftover block of Oxaca Travertine over and cut it the other way. Pattern's not as fancy but has nice tight rolling hills. I've cut cabs from this orientation before and they come out pretty nice. Decided to cut some more Firefly Jasper as I've traded or given away most my slabs of this stuff. I mine this myself from a site in the nastiest thistle patch you can imagine. Gonna have to take a machete in next time to cut a place large enough to dig *L*. This is a poppy type jasper with spots and small pink and white poppies on a black-purple hematite rich jasper. Man it turns my wheels and saws red! Closer shot of the poppies:

These all look really good. Look forward to seeing the cabs they will yield.

Very nice slabs, especialy the first ones. Is that travertine hard enough to polish?

Adrian: I wouldn't try to tumble polish the travertine but it cabs up very easy on diamond wheels and takes a mirror polish with optical grade tin oxide....Mel

That firefly jasper makes my eyes go crossed. Which is actaully a good thing!
I have to be careful carrying a machete around these parts. I was out doing some surveying a few years back, was walking down the side of a road with the machete in a sheath on my belt. A cop goes by turns around and proceeds to do everything but a body cavity search. Took a while to convince him I was using it on plants and not people. Turns out they consider it a weapon and since I had it in a sheath it was considered a concealed weapon. Got away with only three years in jail. (just kidding about the jail part)

Tony: Good blade advice for civilized parts! Where I hunt though it's old timely cowboy country. Blades and even sidearms are the rule. Way out in the boonies and lots of brush to cut, not to mention bears, mountain lions, and the ever present marijuana garden or meth lab you might stumble into. See game wardens now and then but seldom a sheriff and they're all very cool when they do come around.Got to admit the county seat, Mariposa, did pass a new ordinance though, no bowie knives to be worn in town! ( This is true too!)..Mel

I know it's been said, but I love that first stuff. The colours, the patterns, the contrasts...just beautiful.
