Neph-
Now, you've gone and done it! You know I've always wanted to go for a scuba trip and your pictures have given me the next best thing. I love the shot looking up thru the entagling kelp beds.
Cool stuff bud,
Gaetz

Thanks, Tony for sharing with us your underwater world. The 4th pic is beautiful, with that big jade and the red sea-star. But where's the mermaid? Adrian

Well the photos are really crappy, but it was a 20.00 camera. If there is enough interest I will take my real dive camera, and better quality shots. I only use it on vacation, and never take it to Big Sur due to the rugged terrain. Also when I go jade diving that is all I want to do! I guess I can forgo that just once. Here are the grainy blurry photos Unless the fish are the crappies, I don't see anything crappy about the mysterious world you get to visitout there. What I do think, however, is that you are going to have to "forgo that [jade diving] just once because now that you have given us this glimpse, we want more!!! My favorite photos from your "crappy" set: Love the starfish that is just entering the scene. Perhaps it is the guardian of the jade. I'm a sucker for sunlight dappling through water. This one is positively eerie. It looks like there is an ethereal diver looking back at you. Another seeker for a Mermaid's Tear? Can't wait to see the National Geogrphic-worthy montage you produce with your good camera. Lady B

That starfish is way cool. Do you ever get tangled up in the seaweed? Are there sharks? Anything else that would scare me to death?

Tim, glad this could give somewhat of a glimpse as to what it is like. The pictures are pretty bad, maybe with my other camera I can get some really good shots. The ocean visibility was pretty good at 40 ft, There were a lot of fish around and for some reason these were following me.
Jamie, I left out a bunch of stuff on this dive. It didn't really go too smooth. First off before I got in the water there was a strange brown mass of fur out about 50 yards. In the back of my mind I knew what it was and swimming near it on the way out my thoughts came true. It was a dead Stellar sea lion with a huge gash on the side of it. I stayed away from it in case something came back for seconds. After not finding my trophy jade, I went to get my camera out of the bag and it was gone. I didn't think I would see it again but it Showed up on the second dive. I have lots of stuff I carry around for safety and stuff to get jade out. While the ocean wasn't all that calm, the bottom was really surgy too. I was getting pushed back and forth the entire time. The kelp is a magnet for my gear and I was constantly pulling/cutting it off me. While carrying dive gear, shooting pictures and looking for jade at the same time it was really wearing down my energy. On the last dive after giving up the trophy piece, I headed off for deeper water. This was the best as it was a little calmer then the shallows and the vis opened up a lot more. After swimming around about 40 min's I started heading in, about 200 yards from shore my legs cramped up. This was very painful. After about ten Min's they were back to normal. While in the shallow area I got snagged on something, it was fishing line. Fishing line? Who would fish out here in the middle of nowhere? Lucky thing I carry a sharp knife with me at all times. I cut myself free. This could be death for any diver. Heading back up the cliff and glancing over to the south cove I saw the fishermen. I kept my anger intact and didn't go over to throw them in the ocean. I realized they deserve to be here too and enjoy what the ocean has to offer. So that was what I left out, it isn't always perfect.

Tony, great name by the way, I believe you get the award for the most extreme rock hounding trip. After seeing the photos I was stoked to try it myself (not that the Jersey shore has anything but trash in the water). Then I read you longer post and decided that sometimes no rocks can be a blessing. The tangle in the fishing line sounds harrowing. Thanks for sharing your trip.

Thanks, thanks, thanks! How amazing! Geez, I guess those underwater cheapo cameras are a little more expensive than the regular ones ($7.99 w/flash for an off brand). Thanks so much for doing that! I sure appreciate the glimpse into your jade world!
