Howdy folks, Well, finally cut some of this stuff. Couldn't get much in the way of decent slabs as the best plume was near the edges. Have spent the morning trying to get a decent photograph but so far this is the best I could do. Camera doesn't seem to like to focus on these fluffy plumes in natural light. Probably need one of those light tents. Anyway, this is the rare Owl Hole Plume or Owlhead Mountains Plume from near Death Valley National Monument. Think the area is now closed due to park expansion. There's another type that is mostly all gold colored but that pic wouldn't come out. Thanks for looking and again, sorry for the lousy pics....Mel A bit closer:

If these are lousy pics, then that rock MUST BE to die for! Those plumes look like they are suspended in water.

Man that's neat. The plumes are so well defined. Never seen one with so many different colored plumes.

That's an awesome looking rock! I love the different coloured plumes in the same matrix - I count 4 clear distinct variations. Would this be the right place to enquire the difference between plume and moss? (I do hope it's not another case of flint and chert - if so please nudge me! ). Thanks for sharing the rocks, it's always good to see the amazing cuts you get on such interesting rough. Cheers all, Harry.

Nice Plume there Mel!
So you think your pics are lousy, huh? I'd hate to think of what you think of the demented things I post and call them pics. :-)

Harry: Plume is basically the name give to distinct feathery looking inclusions built of little platey crystal arrangements. Normally, if these structures are black or brown and more treelike, they are called dendrites. If the inclusions are not formed into distinct plumes or feathers and are just filaments of varying density scattered through the chalcedony, it's called moss. Lots of misnamed agate types in these catagories ( especially on E-Bay) and also lots of intergrades ie. Mossy Plume so it can get confusing....Mel
