Hi All,
My family and I just returned from our second vacation. We went to Clear Lake in Oregon. Nearby cities are Sweet Home & Sisters. For those that have never been there, Clear Lake is an unbelievably turquoise blue Lake that has a petrified forest STILL STANDING at the bottom of the lake. Because of the waters clarity, you can see entire trees all the way to the bottom, including the roots!!! It is unbelievable. You can even reach out and touch a few of them that are just below the surface of the water. This was our second trip there and although the photos are not as clear this time because of the ripples in the water, you will still be as impressed as I am, I am sure of it. Imagine floating in a row boat over the top of a petrified forest! It is a very eerie feeling.
The trees appear to be short logs maybe 10 or 20 feet tall but in reality, what you are seeing is 60-80 foot tall trees. The area used to be a forest and then a volcano spewed lava and ash all over the area, then a lake formed after the lava created natural dams. Because of the ash and water, the trees petrified into the state you see in the photos.
The trees in the photos are just the very few that are visible. The resort owners told us that in the deepest part of the lake (where it is too dark and deep to see the bottom) there is an entire forest down there. Divers can enjoy the view but even when geared up for the dive, the water is so cold year round that they can only stay down for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
Enjoy!
