I love fossils,I enjoy prepping them too.I traded for the Keichousaur from a source in this country 7 years ago. When I recieved it all that was exposed was a couple of ribs and a few segments of the tail.I have a Doctor who will xray fossils for me at his cost so I can see whats in the rock.It took me 5 years to expose what you see in this photo.I finished it earlier this year. They are a reptile from the Triassic age.Look at the little razor like teeth. Some of you may have seen these on ebay or for sale elsewhere.....BE ADVISED!These are highly faked to the point that 80% for sale on the market are fakes!! the head little bones that were also amongst this plate

Wow, that is very impressive. Are the fakes pretty convincing or are they just taking advantage of people that dont know any better. What sort of things do you need to look out for to identify the fake ones?

Wow! That is amazing, and also amazing is that you had the SKILL and PATIENCE to reveal such a treasure! How cool, that you can Xray rocks to see the fossil; do you use the xray as a guid, while you are uncovering it?

Wow, that is one nice Keichousaur! Considering what was exposed to begin with, you have done a lot of excellent prep work on it. What did you use to prep it with? I really like the little scattering of disarticulated bones...it really adds some character to it. All in all, this is a killer specimen.

Wow that's outstanding! Did you use an air scribe to do that? I have a couple muffin crab nodules that I hope to 'uncover' someday. That's a truly impressive achievement Brad.

Wow, that is really cool, I can't imagine the patience you need for that. Wonderful job of bringing it back out into the open again.

That is awesome! He's such a neat little creature, looks like a miniature dinosaur even though it's a reptile. Did he live before or after the dinos? Looks like teadious work to expose all those tiny little bones. Great job and thanks for sharing it.

Thanks to all for your kind comments! It is a labor of love but takes no more patience than cabbing or faceting. Its like cabbing a opal, work a little look alot and you will be safe.
I really don't have any elaborate tools. Most of the work was done with modified dental tools and a stereo microscope. When I say modified I mean, the local denist sell me thier broken picks and such and I modify them to be of use for fossil prep or jewelry work. Here is a list of tools I use for fossil prepping.
Dental picks and chisels. Stereo microscope Foredom flexable shaft unit w/diamond bits hand held electric scribe
Chemicals------
Vinegar Hydrogen peroxide Iron out Muratic acid
Shannon,It would be hard to tell you how to spot fakes without showing you some fakes.Like was stated look for finger prints in the matrix is one.The color of the matrix should be as shown, alot of the fakes will be lighter in color. The healed fractures should follow through the slab as one would expect to see in any rock. For example look how the small lines run through the eye sockets of mine,if it was fake the fracture lines would not continue. The fakes I have see all the bones are perfect....no fusing like on the neck of mine.
Karen, yes you can xray rock,in fact I have been looking for a fluoroscope for my fossils. If your old enough you will know what a fluoroscope is.I use the xray like a map to get me started, then its more a case of follow the bone.
Thanks again to all.

I was late in responding to this thread but I have learned so much more by my tardiness. The dedication and love you devoted to exposing this ancient creature are awe-inspiring. And the little reptile itself--beautiful beyond words.
We walk in the footprints of giants...and sometimes in very tiny footprints as well. This is such a magnificent planet. Thank you for sharing yet another aspect of its glorious beauty.
