Some of you may have seen this on another board. This is the only stone I have that I know exactly when it was formed----right down to the last second! On July 16,1945 at 0530 MST this stone was formed in a flash. The first ever atomic bomb was detonated at TRINITY SITE, TULAROSA BASIN,New Mexico and fused the surrounding sand for 2400 feet. Most of it was bulldozed and buried by the United States Atomic Energy Commission in 1952. It is now illegal to take the remaining material from the site.It is known as Trinitite or Atomite and a few still call it Alamogordo Glass(which is what the gent I aquired it from called it). In 1979 I was able to trade some gem quality dinosaur bone to an oldtime rockhound for a 5 gallon bucket full of Trinitite. The old gent I aquired it from collected it before the collecting was shut off.As for its radioactivity,it almost nil.It is safe enough that it can be sent via USPS.Without further ado..........

KD,I plum forgot to give that information didn't I?This material is like a Fulgerite. It would not make good material for a cab very gritty.
I should also mention that if the notion strikes anyone who reads this and wants a piece.....do your homework first.Lots of fakes on ebay and other places. No none of mine is for sale,I'll be honest I am hoarding it.I can however provise the information for getting some. Its cost is usually $20 per gram.

Yeah - I know someone that knows someone that knows someone ( ) who says they can get me out there to collect LEGALLY. I'm somewhat dubious about the sketchy details, though, and would rather not get thrown in jail or irradiated.

Neat story! That's interesting, that it is not radioactive. I found that a bit surprising, altho after reading more, I can understand why not. And I hear ya, it's definately a part of history, and I can understand why you won't part with it. How cool, to have a tangible piece of that era in your hands!
