So this morning I have a PM here from rocklicker pointing me to a craigslist ad for a lapidary slab saw "cuts rocks real smooth" I think was the tag line- the picture was a bit fuzzy but it looked like a forlorn and rusty- but real saw and for only $50?! deal was you had to come pick it up. Needless to say, I am now a member of the big saw club, with a vintage 18" lortone added to my tool kit, although this poor machine has been run hard and put away wet. So I think I'm looking at a fairly extensive restoration project before she'll be up to slicing all the loot from that sale in Hayward last month. But at $3,100 off retail, I think I can afford to do a little bit of sprucing it up!

Oh, and what a toy!!! Did I get it right, did it cost you only $50 + bringing home? If so, you can say it was for free!
Have fun and cut lots of stunning rocks withit!

That is the most beautiful pile of rust I have ever seen. Glad you got it! Looks like some derusting, painting and rewiring are you are mostly there. All the major components appear to be intact. It does have the "racoon lived in it" look but I bet you will have it cleaned out pretty soon. Betcha can't wait to see that thing go on it's maiden cut. Keep us posted with the restoration. Steve

I have a lortone 18" and it stopped feeding, so i called lortone and tired to order 3 parts for the carriage, well last week i talked to them again and its going to take atleast 2 months before they have the parts in. They said they can't even send out the new saws cause someone didn't order the parts. i hate waiting 2 months before the saw will be up and running again. Maybe someone here has other opitions? Everything is moving and working, it just won't move up the threads to feed it into the rock.

I would say that was a great deal! Talk to Ed about motors, there is a great place to buy them for Penny's on the dollar here in San Jose. Let me know when you get it done as I need some rocks slabbed up LOL!

Yesterday I spent a good couple of hours cleaning out the tank- there was a good solid inch and a half of rock dust sediment in the thing- no wonder it seemed so friggin' heavy!!
At least now two people can fairly easily move it around.
Next job is to see if I can get the motor to spin.
