I went to "Wenrics" today, a local rock shop down the street from where I live. I was just bored and thought I would look around. While looking in the various display cases I saw a trippy looking stone with weird swirls of colors. I remembered someone on this board cabbed some recently. I asked the counter person if it was for sale and he no, its just for display. I asked him where on earth this type of stone comes from and he told me the history of it. I couldn't believe it was old paint slag from the ford plants back in the day. Its paint leftover from the painting of cars. I guess some rock hound went into the plants and asked if they could have the stuff. They don't have this anymore as they use a different painting method these days but I thought it was a cool story. Before I left he went into the back room and gave me a big glob of the stuff to take home for nothing. I will cab some when I get the chance, I am sure its pretty soft stuff. Here is a website that explains it all www.fordite.com it's pretty cool story for sure, heres my glob of the old paint LOL!

Tony, That was so cool of him to give you a piece of that. It is great stuff...even though it's not a real rock! Beef cabbed some up a little while ago, and I think Ed did some too. It is also called "chevyite" for those non-loving ford people. Steve

Now this is just too weird! Yesterday after work I had to get a couple of my tires fixed, and by some small miracle, the tire shop is across the street from the rock shop(Wenrics, the same one Tony goes to). So since I had an hour to kill, I walked across the street and hung out with the owner and his worker and we talked about rocks, his business, and I too was checking out what he had in his display case. I saw a chunk of Fordite in the back corner and we talked about the origins of the material and the story behind how he came into possession of a whole box of this stuff. When I went to hand it back to him, he told me to keep it, it's on the house! I was happier than a cat covering up s# t! ;D Here's the piece he gave me.

Ed that is like a twilight zone episode! I really had nothing interesting going on and thought I would check out the local rock shop. That piece really caught my eye as it is really different looking, plus after seeing it cabbed awhile back I was curious as to where it came from. I too was talking to rick, he is a nice person and pretty generous for giving it away.
