Beefjello sent me these along with those Lakers from the contest. some of these ended up with matte "flat spots", and i'm not quite sure why, but all in all, they came out pretty well. danged difficult to photograph though. in the shade they look black: and in the sunshine they look all dinged up, but they aren't: fun tho, i've never had enough before to do a whole batch. thanks for looking!! KD

Amazing shine! I can see your camera in some of them (3rd pic, left). Nice transparency.

KD,
I think you did a great job! They look beautiful from this perspective.
When I first started buying rough stones to tumble I wanted to buy some Apache tears because they are special to our family. Then I read what Shawn over at the Rock Shed wrote about them:
These are Apache Tears from 3/8" to 1" in size. Although somewhat harder to polish than the harder stones such as agate they will make a very pretty tumbled stone. They will polish best by not mixing with other types of stone and using an additional step with 1000 grit Aluminum Oxide. Use plastic pellets to cushion them in the last three finish steps.
I ended up buying a bag of polished ones, instead! ;D
Yours look just as pretty as the ones I bought!

Great job! I've always found those kind of difficult to polish until all the flat spots are ground into curves. Yours look like they have a great shine to me!.....Mel

Those are sure shiny KD! I treid a load of them myself, but gave up on them. Maybe my mistake was that it was one in my beginning tumbling days...when I hadn't learned the trick of patience. Yours turned out fantastic. Steve

I really like those - you did great!
but I do have a question: if you bust up some obsidianand tumble it, how can you tell it apart from apache tears if they both get rounded?

Great looking tears. I haven't got the courage to try these yet.

KD those are awesome! Beefjello is a generous person for sure. He sent me some awhile back and it has a translucent Smokey look thru light but your right, they are jet black from a distance. A very cool stone.

Because apache tear comes from volcanos like obsidian does, I tumbled mine tears and obsidian together. Those turned out great. Tami

Came out real nice. The natural roundness of the tears always make them look so good. Wish agates and woods would be like that.
