Tonight I gave a talk at our local rock club about the Arizona trip. I brought a bunch of rock in to show people. It was fun and everyone liked hearing about it. But what was most interesting was that someone made an interesting discovery about a rock I had though was just a regular agate. Steve First, the rock: Here's the inside: Just a regular rock I tuought, but then someone held it up and said, "It's a tooth!" Sure enough, there's a tooth coming out of it! Here you can see it a lot better from this angle: From the shape of it, it appears to be some sort of fossilized jaw bone section. It's shape makes a lot more sense now. This came from the "dead cow" area when we were on the Arizona trip. And no, this wasn't part of the cow. This is clearly a rock. Here's a closeup of the tooth:

Steve this is wild! Not to hijack your post, but I have one that I swear looks like a jaw full of teeth, and so help me, I'm going to go downstairs and try to get a picture of it.

I'm not too knowledgable but if it was a fossilized bone wouldn't it have a structure like the other dino bone I've seen here?

I'm going to try to show this to folks at rock club -- hopefully the fossil guy will show up. It occurred to me that teeth might well be preserved because of their dense and hard composition while surrounding bone might deteriorate or be consumed by predators. The rock came from burro creek Roxy -- notice the brecciated lower section -- it should look real familiar!

Wow, cool rock! it does look like teeth but may just be a unique formation, like lots of blobs stuck together. I hope it's teeth. It would look cool sliced and polished like that to show off the chompers! On thinking about it, I agree that the one I found is probably not a fossil because there is no real bone structure in it. It just happened to look that way I guess. I still think I'll leave it that way. I am curious as to what the folks at your rock club say about the one you found. Steve

Steve, your first pic almost looks like part of an ancient, hand-rubbed animal or something?? (Plus I do see the tooth). Does it look shaped at all, or is it the natural rock? Curious and curiouser... K

Very interesting rock, Puppie! Weird pattern!
Steve, i also found some rocks like yours, they are siliceous nodules and i found them into limestone areas.
