Well, I have to admit my Christmas spirit just wasn't clicking in. We set aside some money for Christmas and left my wife in charge of it. That's a good thing because she shopped well and got everyone covered for presents. That's typically how we do it but I always go out Christmas eve day and get the kids and my wife something special. Well this year the piggy bank doesn't even rattle so no last minute shopping spree. So I got busy today in my Studio with the Big Front Door and cranked out a few presents: For my teenage son and my future son-in-law (they each get a bracelet. I only photographed one because they are the same): For my Daughter who likes light colored Cripple Creek Turqouise: And for my wife, a Petersite pendant with 14k gold accent. I can't take credit for cutting the stone because I bought from a dealer friend in Denver: Merry Christmas to all and thank you for making me feel welcome in your little enclave of rockhounds! Rick

Rick, I've been admiring your work from afar. To think that you did all that in your workshop today is just mindboggling. Great stuff.
And we are darn glad to have you here.

That Cripple Creek Turquoise come from the Bad Boys mine that is within the city limits of Cripple Creek, Colorado. There is another Turquoise mine called the Florence mine which is adjacent to the Bad Boys mine. Over the years I've heard a couple of stories about how Cripple Creek got it's name.
Cripple Creek was one of the last boom towns with the gold rush of the 1800s. Cripple Creek gold was overlooked by the initial prospectors because the gold is within telurides or teluride gold. Teluride gold has a different appearance than normal gold ore it looks more like silver ore and in fact contains some silver and requires a different smelting process to refine it. That smelting process wasn't invented until the late 1800's thus the late entry of Cripple Creek in the gold boom of the 1800's.
Anyway, one story is a group of injured prospectors were sitting around the camp fire commiserating about their bad luck. One had a broken leg, one had burned his hand, etc. Then one of them said, "Boys, this is some Cripple Creek."
The other version is that before the gold boom, cattle drivers and ranchers had so many cattle break their legs crossing the small creek there that they dubbed it Cripple Creek.
Take your pick. Both stories sound plausible. I haven't heard any definitive historical opinions over which is the true story.
Merry Christmas all! And thank you for the compliments. I have truly acquired my Christmas spirit.
Rick
