I just found this website and am very excited. I live in Minnesota and have been collecting rocks (mostly agates) for the past 3-4 years (started at Lake Superior and now mostly in gravel pits). I don't have a tumbler yet and have been thinking about getting one, but there are so many choices! Anyway, it's very fun to find other rock lovers out there.

Welcome to the board Barb! There's a fair number of Minnesotans here as you have began to see. I hope you get a tumbler so you can start tumbling all those rock you collect. Steve

Hi Barb. I wanted to put my two cents in on tumblers. I recommend either Thumler's Tumbler or Lortone. Both are American made with parts available. Both are meant to be used for years. Lortone's smaller models are a little less expensive than Thumler's. Lortone uses really thin plastic bearings and lighter duty motors than most Thumler's. Thumler's 6lb and larger are less expensive than Lortone. The larger Thumler's are easily convertible to use smaller barrels. I have two really old Thumler's that I've been using for years. I've heard too many horror stories about the Harbor Freight/Chicago Electric tumblers. Tools are a lot like shoes - always by the best you can afford. Welcome to the group.

Welcome Barb. I have a Lortone 3# tumbler and it has been great. Parts are available readily. I have had mine for two years now and it goes constantly! I'm looking into getting the one that has two 3# barrels on it. Can't afford it now but maybe i'll get it for christmas. Take care, Ed M.

Thanks all for welcoming me! I haven't had a chance to check the site in a while. I am going agate hunting this weekend, so am looking foward to that. I will try to make some time to get some pictures (if I can figure out how to do that), though none of them will be tumbled.
I recently bought a house, so it's not as easy as it used to be to just buy something - so now I'm saving up for that tumbler!
I have a few rocks that I have found that I have no idea what they are, so I'll probably be posting pictures of those as well.
