I bought my son Thumbler's Tumbler - the Model "T" when he was 9 years old. That was in 1983. He never took much interest in tumbling, so I've decided to take a tumble myself, using his ancient but basically like-new machine, 24 years later.
As for the rough-stuff, I've been collecting 'interesting' stones for about 8 years, mostly from a beach near our cottage on eastern Lake Ontario. Most of it's naturally pre-tumbled by the waves, and I suspect that it will mostly need pre-polish and polish stages. I've gathered lots of quartz: white, rose, and smoky; and many granite pebbles that seem to have potential.
I ordered tumbling grits last week from the R*ckshed and they were here in three days, great service I must say.
I'll be back when I have some great photos to share

Welcome, Leeroy. Is that Model T running now with your first batch? That'd be cool if the belt/O-ring still has some life in it after sittin' around for a quarter of a century.

Greetings! Go for it Leeroy and Welcome to the Board Sir. Why should the kids have all the fun hey?! Glad it still runs and I can't wait to see what you've been collecting to tumble. The beach is such a great place to pick up food for the tumbler, and what a thrill it is when you find that really special rock. Best of luck with your new found interest, may it flourish in to rock filled joy mate. There's nothing in this world quite like picking up a sad dull little pebble and making it shine and sparkle, but I will warn you of this. It seems like any other normal forum here, a group of folks, mainly chatting rocks - Watch Out! This gang are Rock Obsessed! and what they don't tell you is how virulent and infectious they are with their rock tumbling madness. They are the best group of rock tumbling buddies you could wish to meet, a real friendly group who bring some sunshine to your day - whatever the weather. Feel free to ask anything, there is always someone who wants to help you here, and don't forget to post your photos for all to see, did nobody mention were really like pictures? Cheers, Harry.

Welcome! This place is addictive, I agree. There ought to be a way to lock certain forums... I keep drooling over the cabochon section to the point that my husband is going to choke when he sees my Christmas wish list... Not to mention that I planned to be at the grocery store an hour ago (oops).
Welcome, welcome!

Thanks all for the warm welcome. Kinda reminds me of one of those 12-step groups - and that's a GOOD THING. You might hear me gripe about the lack of GUD STUFF to polish, but I'm actually very pleased with what I've found so far. I have a sister who lives north of Las Vegas who loves to rockhound in the desert; another sister with a cottage at Higgins Lake, MI who has already given me some of that great Petoskey stone, and brothers on both coasts of Florida who spend lots of time at the beach, so I can envision my mail carrier or the UPS guy hitching up his truss when he gets to my house. HA HA HA I'm recovering from my second coronary bypass in 14 years, so I've got the distinctive zipper-over-zipper pattern that is so sexy for the scar set. When I'm not hunting rocks, I'm playing blues harp, metal detecting, learning card-weaving, attempting to construct some wind chimes, and entertaining numerous nieces and nephews (about 67 at last count, including greats and 2-greats) because my 4 grandchildren live too far away. I have a number of mystery rocks I'll photograph for your attempted ID or simply to spread the "Cool" factor around. Again.... Thanks.... My name is Larry, and I'm a Rockhound....

Learning card-weaving? What is that? Got all the other stuff, way to go! And good health to ya! My name is Karen, and I've yet to have grandkids (God forbid, my sons are only 20 and 16!!), but I have lots of nephews and a neice, who bring me rocks.
