When setting a gem stone in a prong setting, the burr to bead the prong can scratch even diamonds. Set your prong in the usual manner. Coat the stone with coloured fingernail polish. Use the appropriate cup burr and grind the top of the prong. When you are approaching the stone with the burr, the fingernail polish will start to fuzz up. Stop there. Wash the fingernail polish off with remover. Watch out for emeralds. Go lightly with the remover so the oil is not washed from the stone. A fragile stone like Tanzanite can be severely damaged by chipping. Try this trick for the tough ones.
