Depends on the stone. Check out a local cemetary; you'll find the marble headstones are more weathered than the granite. I'd guess that good hard granite, which is quartz, feldspar and mica, will probably hold a polish for a hundred years or more, depending on local precipitation. This is the sort of question that isn't really answerable, although checking out really old cemetaries will give you clues.

You might tell the young ones, that the shine will remain as long as someone loves the stone. That might sound trite or contentious, but it transfers the beauty to the one who has possesion. With enough interest, they will research.

I'd have to agree with docone on this one, Since I use stones for more than just to look pretty...and to be jewlry ....the truth is stones hold energy and lifeforce just like any person or object. So as long as it keeps constantly being touched and used or held it will keep constantly being infused with energy. This will allow it to shine, and be beautiful for lifetimes that we will never be around to see.

Nonsense! Your rocks are not actually alive. They are inanimate objects. Please, please, I beg you, let's not let this nice little board become a haven for crystal power baloney. Post on a crystal power board if you want to, there must be a dozen of them.
If your stones literally talk to you; if you think they have healing powers; if you're a Wicca Earth Goddess and use majik stones to cast spells; if you go to mineral shows and hold your hands over specimens, discussing their auras; if you see dead people, or really like lame Bruce Willis films; or if you believe in ghosts and goblins, please post it elsewhere. The net is already horribly polluted with such nonsense, we don't need it here.
I'm not denying your right to hold your own opinions, I'm not denying your right to free speech, I'm not saying you can't practice your new age religion, I'm just asking you to spare us from your cluelessness. There are plenty of places you can talk with fellow devotees, please post to the crystal power boards.
Looking at things in a rational and scientific manner does not actually take all the fun out of the hobby - it increases it by tenfold. Serious mineralogy is so cool it will blow you away, you don't need a PhD to do it. Start educating yourself, instead of mindlessly believing the endless reams of braindead crystal power paperbacks. I am a mineral lover who really hates it when people rip off the naive, selling them minerals that they claim will cure disease and every other problem.
Noah, sorry to unload on you like this. It's not directed at you personally, it's directed to all the crystal power types out there that endlessly force their agenda upon us, yet don't even have a quarter so they could buy a clue. I despise the shysters that pretend to know everything about minerals yet do not even own a copy of Fleischer's Glossary - and don't even know what I mean by that.

Perhaps I helped this thread get a little sideways. I have a little fellow at the shop who goes with his grandparents. They allow him to visit other trusted vendors and he has a regular route. He has an insatiable appetite for learning. He is full of those "stupid" questions, how?, why?, what?, and although he gets in the way most of the time I enjoy his visits. He asked once, how long do they stay polished? I gave him a stone and told him, untill you neglect it. He went away for about a week, and came back with lots of questions. I like this kid, and I am trying to show him how to work with silver. He is pretty inexperienced but he keeps trying. That is what I like most. He keeps trying. He came to me with a piece of turquoise that had been waxed. I got to explain the difference. He is starting to love the stone. On the other hand. I had a dramatic toothache. My wife who is from the west coast, put a crystal of quartz on my face. I like things I can measure, and experiments I can repeat. I prefer linear results, predictability, I want to be able to research, refer, and compare my results. I am a teetotaler. Was not before, am now for some time. That said, after she "introduced", gotta love her, me to the crystal, I was able to sleep to get medical attention the next day. It made her happy. I think she ate too much Granola, but another crystal has had some impact in my life. With the kids, and adults, I really want them to share the joy of discovery, and hands on, that has made such a difference to me. The WOW! factor has never really left me. I do think however, if someone filled me with the MAJICK when I sought semantics, I might have had more contention in my perspectives. I like things I can measure, research, and can attempt to duplicate. Newton's physics came from his research into alchemy. I used to like Granola and Tsampa, but now I prefer a good steak. Bravo to us all, we make me think and learn more.

I haven't seen any rules on the board, saying you cannot post what you believe or don't believe about the power of rocks.Personally I don't have such a belief, but I'm also not so bothered by what others say, that I feel a need to lecture anyone else about their thoughts or beliefs. If I don't like what I'm reading I don't read it!

Wow! I've been a member here for maybe one week, and I've been astounded by the lack of controversial threads or topics, dissention in the ranks, etc.
As to the meaning of the sudden disturbance in the force, I can only say it may mean that we are not, after all, dull as rocks (so to speak).
This board is great!

Well SirRoxalot I'm sorry if I offended you with my beliefs, as I will respect your wishes and not bring my beliefs into this board any longer, but I will say one thing I don't appreciate you downing my beliefs you could have simply said this is not something which belongs here. Choose your words more carefully next time, as this is a board where people converse not where we sit face to face and words is all I have to judge you by.

Play nice, be kind. So can't we all just get along? This board has room for diversity. I appreciate my new found rock passion as well as the people I am finding. They are people who appreciate peace and beauty and have the gift of patience, as if reflecting the geology that formed the rocks. They are also smart people with the ability to appreciate the science of the chemistry and geology behind it all, and to convey it as mentors. All positive feelings about rocks have a place here, whether or not based in physical properties. This board is a nice place, I hope all will be welcome.

Er, Noah, from my above post I quote:
"Noah, sorry to unload on you like this. It's not directed at you personally, it's directed to all the crystal power types out there that endlessly force their agenda upon us, yet don't even have a quarter so they could buy a clue."
My post was probably a little harsh, but that's just my reaction to pseudoscience. It has such a grip on the world today that I occasionally blow up when it infringes upon my favorite little corner.

Thats not a problem I understand that not everyone chooses to believe what I believe, and I respect that. I'm used to these types of responses from people, and with this lets just drop the issue as I'd prefer to keep this a happy place =).

I have wondered how long the stones would retain their polish. I suppose, the answer truly is until it is eventually weathered away (which could be pretty quick with todays acid rains) or until the shine is worn away by the scratches and dings of constantly moving in ones pocket with change, keys etc.
With each batch of rock that I remove from the tumblers, I experience the WOW thing. Even finding a particularly beautiful candidate for polishing in the field is exciting. Once polished, to hold something that is millions of years old and to be able to see the beautiful colors and patterns of the inside just takes my breath away.
Each time I pick up my bucket and hammer and go off into the field, there is that feeling of anticipation and excitement. I am never disappointed, I always find something, and can't wait to go back again.
This hobby is awesome, I love it.

A friend of mine picked up a piece of hard rough agate 40 years ago. he is still carrying it in his pocket. today because of 40 years worth of holding it and jostling it etc... it is a rounded, highly polished rock.
