These look like they will end up pitting a lot. Is there something you do to prevent that during tumbling?

most people do not tumble petosky stones, or they tumble them well padded in medium grit to get them shaped only.
they are generally polished some other way.
petosky stones are fairly soft.

heres a trick...tumble them in economy syrup...maple or any other sweet syrup

I sure learned alot. Sometimes, I must admit, I'm a bit overwhelmed with the sheer volume of rock/mineral names. I suppose, well, what I'm trying to do is learn catagories of rocks and then the sub-divisions. My mind is a mess right now.

Hey Thanks for the link. I have been given a few of these stones and didn't know what to do with them. I wonder if I can use the flat lap, starting with the 2nd disc? Also, can they be cut in half and then polished as in to make a cab? Thanks Wolf, I appreciate the info. Tonja
