with the banding I see in the first shot I'd be inclined to say it is some variety of sheen obsidian, for sure not "regular" obsidian.
If the reddish stuff is glassy than that portion would be called mahogany, but with rainbow and some other sheens you sometimes get red powdery oxide pockets, hard to tell what that stuff is....

Hi All, Yes the orange stuff is Mahogany. A lot of times when there are spots of Mahogany, there will also be clear spots thru it, If that is the case, then it is Midnight Lace. If it is as layered as it appears, then it most likely a sheen as RallyRocks said. If you cut it nearly parallel to the layering, you will expose the sheen, then it's just a matter of what color the sheen is, silver, peacock, gold, rainbow, aurora, etc. Of course there are pieces that show a combo of the different types of Obsidian. Hope that helped, let me know if you have any more questions. TTYS, Dan www.dbrockwerks.comwww.dbrockwerks.com/page5.html

Hi Nephrite, There are actually, I believe over 40 types of Obsidian, most are just subtle variations of the main types, some of the sub group names are things like, Pumpkin, Leopard, Tiger, Flame, Fire, and many more, I don't know them all, I just mainly call them by the main names, GoldSheen, Silversheen, Rainbow, etc. Too many names, too many rocks ;-) It is a nice looking chunk of Obsidian, you will have to let us know how it turns out.
