Cina, it does have an odd look, but reminds me a fossil. the hole maybe a Pine Cone replacement? AS ive seen similar casts from Nevada. And your may of just broken off with a piece of legde that makes it look even wilder. Try asking in rockhounds.com rocktalk or mindat.org message baord too. Very cool none the less.

cina: At first look I it might be a vertebra too but the rib on a vertebra would be wider at the base and narrower towards the tip. I'm thinking more along the lines of what Shain said..Maybe a concretion around some kind of fossil remain. Those concretions can take on some pretty odd shapes.....mel

Hmmmm Well if it is some kinda bone (I'm thinking Dino here) it can be a very nice Lapidary material (especially if it is Highly agatized) if it is a concretion- I guess it depends on the hardness- From the pictures it looks like the center should be real hard- But the outer white stuff looks soft and chalky- so the center might be a good tumble- after the chalky stuff was removed!

Petrified cantaloupe. Seen it a thousand times. Muratic acid will remove the scuzz if it is carbonaceous.

At first look it does kind of look like some sort of bone. But, I've been around bones for most of my life, both human and animal and I've never seen such symmetry as is shown in the roundness of the "bowl-like" structure, and the connection between it and the flat part. So, agreeing with some of the others it does look more like a fossil or quite possible some sort of a "burner" as the remnants inside the "bowl" look like embers. The "blade portion under the bowl could, in my minds eye continue around forming a saucer like bottom. All in all it is an intriguing piece!
