This coral can be found in the bays and rivers from Tampa, Florida to Georgia. Coral reefs were buried in volcanic ash millions of years ago and the coral silicified. After the inside of the coral decayed, it's hollow and considered a geode.

Wow!! That stuff is cool! We vacation in Florida every year and I know I will be keeping my eyes open for some of this stuff. Any hints on locations or is it pretty common stuff?

Wow! Isn't that nice! I've picked up lots of pieces of coral on the beach but it never occurred to me that the interior might be agatized like that.

Wow! That is so cool and unusual! Are these things pretty rare? I'm going to inspect my collection of fossilized coral a little closer now...

Hi all this is called Tampa Bay Coral because that where most of it is found. You can still find some but it is getting very rare. They no longer allow digging in Tampa Bay for these and have been told they will not allow public land digging(local river banks). Thanks for the pics very nice. George
