Some of you may have seen the thread where I talked about the rocks that had some strange stuff in them. First pic shows them dry. The cream colored stuff is what liquefies when it gets wet. Now the wet pic. See! Rocks soaked for about 3 min. & they got this crazy stuff. It swelled up on the rock & kinda looks like blond peanut butter or chicken fat! Doesn't have a smell I can detect. Now...when I let them dry...it'll go back to a brittle state. Dave - are these the rocks you thought it might be in? Anyone with any clue...speak now!

Liz, could that be talc? I had some mook with talc around it but it was still pretty hard to chip off - maybe it's the guts of a caterpillar? It's rock pus! Sorry I can't be helpful, I can try to be a comedian, but I can't be very helpful!

Liz, --- no I don't have a clue to what that is ! --- in the other thread , when I answered , I was talking about some hard little nodules ( seperate fronm the rock ) --some were a dark redish brown and floated , the others were tan-ish/black color and were stuck on the outside of the rocks --- they pretty well soaked off with the hose and melted -- just a little dap of mud --- haven't come across this stuff yet --- will watch for some more

Jeez, a material that behaves like that ought to have some commercial purpose.
By the way, Liz, what ever happened to the monkeys that were stealing your clothes at night? Did they get them all?

Wow Liz, hard question. If it were in a geode I might think it was one of the zeoilites like Mordenite ot Todorokite that got saturated, melted and then recrystalized later when it dried. Both those form fibrous masses in geodes and I've encounted cream colored mordenite in Hauser Bed thundereggs ( at least that's what I thought it was *L*) You might want to post your question at the Dirtyrockhounds website as they are primarily mineral collectors and I'm definately lacking expertise in that field *LOL*...mel
Oh, had another thought. it could be one of the earthy, amorphous forms of opal formed by diatoms like diatomaceous or infusorial earth too.

After seeing pudding stone I don't know what rock names to laugh at any more. I thought somebody was kidding when they told me about Spiderman stone until I saw some.
This isn't like that rock licking thread is it? Does it really taste like peanut butter?

Until I can be assured of what the "peanut butter" stuff is, ain't no way it's goin anywhere NEAR the mouth! (It really does more closely resemble chicken fat - ew - but peanut butter is a more acceptable moniker) Besides that Lori...I'm a spitter, not a lickker!

LOL. I'm somewhat relieved. I'm not brave enough to be a licker.

One thing you haven't talked about (at least not that I have seen) is what is underneath the peanut butter. Were crystals forming?
