I'm really loving this box of obsidian Jason Hinkle sent me. Every time I look through it I see something different. I never knew there was so much to obsidian. I can't decide how they should be cut since I'm not sure what they are. My neighbors think I've flipped. "Why are you outside in the cold shining a flashlight through a bunch of wet rocks?"
"Because I want to see what's in there without breaking them."
Sometimes the conversation goes a bit longer but it always ends up with them shaking their heads and leaving the loon to her rocks.
I still think a piece or two is mahogany because it's got that woodgrain look like looking at furniture. One piece is still black and chocolate but really loopy so I'm assuming that's mahogany lace. Some chunks have the little chocolate stripes running parallel along with bands in the texture. One of those has a big dished out area from an old fracture and it crosses the bands. If I hold that area up to the light just right it looks almost chatoyant like tigereye. Gold sheen right? Two pieces are just black but they still have the parallel bands in the texture like tiny little layers. You can feel it with your fingers and see it when the chunks are dry. Would silver sheen or rainbow have that appearance? I was told there might be some midnight lace in the box but I have no idea how to identify that. The chunks are big enough that an LED flashlight can't shine through them so I can't see if they're two-toned black swirls.
One of these days I have to strong arm my son and find out what he did with my camera. If you have any suggestions for me while I threaten him I would appreciate it.
