I found this and a few similar pieces in an area know to have pet palm bog. After cutting it I_think that's what it is, but I'm not completely certain. What do you think? Thanks!

Wow! Kinda has that palm fiber look but the distribution and size of the vascular bundles doesn't look regular enough to be palm. I'd guess it's not palm. We have lots of palm bog here in california too but in that case the rootlets meander through the fossil mud and the saw cut catches them in many places and directions giving them more the look of tubes and eyes etc. Maybe though, there's always atypical examples....mel

The palm found here in AZ looks different than regular petrified wood, I will take a picture of the stuff I have found anyway and show you what it looks like. When are you going out again? Lets get together and do a quick trip close by.

I agree with Mel, it doesn't look like palm bog, and while it does kind of resemble petrified palm wood, the vascular pattern looks much too sparse to be real palm. Could be some kind of unusual fossilization, but I don't think so. Here's a pic of a chunk of palm wood I have, showing the typical vascular bundle distribution you get on palm wood, when sliced perpindicular to the vascular bundles. -Don Here's another way you can check -- if you slice the stone at 90 degrees to the "dot pattern" of the vascular bundles, you should end with this kind of tube pattern if it is real palm wood.

Thanks guys. I have a couple other 'maybes' from that area, I guess I'll know when I cut them. Thanks for the pix Don! Ok so the dif between palm bog and palm wood is that bog is roots? Is that right? Thanks again!

beef: What we call palm bog out here is sort of silicified mud with palm roots, rootlets and vegetation fragments strewn through it in various concentrations. When the roots are really large and well distributed, we just call it palm root and the fiber is actual above ground trunk sections or chunks...mel

Also when your cutting it it has a distinct smell- almost a sulphery smell- There is no mistaking the smell of cutting Pet wood! Based on the Pix I'm saying no to palm- but a posibility to some other type of wood?
