While out hunting my Flint, I came across this neat and unusual fossil. It looks like some kind of coral or sponge, and it seems to be formed from the same materials as the Flint and Chert that I find. It is about the size of my fist. I have found many smaller bits of this same type fossil, but never one this big. Does anyone have an idea as to what it might be? The top looks like a Petoskey Stone with the round, almost pucker-like pattern, but not the same material.

Man, that is a wonderful fossil! Maybe one of the fossil experts can help you more but it sure cold be a coral. The closest thing I've seen out here though would be a stony algae colony similar to those that form the fossil algae at Wamsutter, Wyoming. Algae seems to have concentric, stacked growth rings similar to what you have. I'm far from expert in fossils though. There are some great fossil guys at the other rockhound chat, www.dirtyrockhounds.com. I'd post your pics there in their fossil ID section....mel

Thanks Mel! It really is a neat and rare find for this area - especially since it is such a whole piece. I'll check that link you posted when I get a chance - I've got a couple other different fossil pieces also that they might be able to tell me about .

Some kind of fossil for sure- Replaced with silicon dioxide- to make a flint fossil (or is it chert???) that is either a coral colony, Algea, or possibly Sponge??? Any way you look at it it is very cool!

Thats pretty cool! It looks sort of like an algae mat. I have found similar but not quite the same looking sort of stuff. Recently I came across an algae boulder that is kind of huge. I have to go back out and get a pic. It is way to large to pack home, can't quite figure out how to get it in the truck Bob

Thanks everyone for the info. This piece will definitely be put aside for my growing collection.
Bob - The flint/chert box that I sent you should have some pieces that contain some single ribbons of this same type fossil running through it. I have noticed them alot, but never in a whole formation like this one. They polish up as good as the rest of the surrounding material and add a uniqueness to each piece.
