I found this while wood hunting a while back. It's a little soft so I don't know how well it will polish, but would look nice if it does. It's got a few small veins of agate running through it that is not shown in the pic. Anyone have a clue?

Never seen anything quite like it but it sure has a neat organic look to it. We have a lot of what we call bog out here in California that is basically fossil mud with lots of roots and rootlets all wound through it. It's not that color but looks real similar in texture and form. Would be interesting to see if cutting it reveals any root cross sections as what you have looks almost like a fossil root ball of some kind ( maybe palm or fern?) When you wet it can you see any sort of circles or eyes that might indicate roots? Here's a pic of about a 90 pound hunk of agatized bog with palm roots. You've probably seen this stuff before if you hunt wood in Texas, but to the right of the specimen about 3 o'clock and just in from the edge, you can see one of the root cross sections that appears as sort of a bulls eye formation. The slab pic is from a different location but shows the material cut. As you can see, the roots can appear as agate veins or streamers when transected lengthwise or at an angle....mel

Thanks Mel. That's a great specimen you have there.
I was kind of thinking bog. I looked at it through a magnifying glass and found some orbs. There are more agatized veins than I thought and a little druse on the outside. Dang, I have to get a saw, if nothing but a WF. I've been holding out for used equipment, but it's scarce as hen's teeth around here.
