Hmm. You sure it's a metallic mineral? Looks almost like muscovite mica books in some of the pics. If it is metal, probably something in the lead group like galena etc..mel

The dark "metalic" stuff you refer to does bear an uncanny resemblance to mica. Find an exposed bit of it and try to scratch it with a pin. If it picks away and scratches fairly easily it is probably mica. If it doesn't scratch or break away easilly it may be black feldspar which often looks metalic. Sometimes even iron pyrite can look black but I somehow doubt that's what it is... Do you know where the source of the material is? The geology of the area would help indicate what likely inclusions to expect.

Source of material is babbitt peak near california and nevada border for the quartz (yes I collected it). The area has lots of quartz, especially terminated crystals which was fun to collect. The wood? looking thing was collected near Gabbs area in nevada. Found lots of agate there and some petrified wood, this just looks alot different than the other specimens I found. Thank you again for the help.

Pyrite and magnesite (I hope I got the sp right!) can be fairly common in association with other rocks. I have a faceted clear quartz stone the has pyrite suspended inside it. The guy at local rock shop identified it by looking through a loupe & seeing how the crystal formed. Maybe someone you know someone who could do the same?

I think it's hematite, hematite crystals. Galena is cubic.

It could be calcopyrite. Here in Georgia, we have lots of it. Sometimes it will apprear in cubic form, but mostly random thru out quartz chunks. Try scratching it very fast with another metal object then take a quick sniff. If it smells like a "rooten egg" "sulfer", them most likely it is pyrite. Hope this helps some.
