Water geyser system?

I have a question on the water geyser systems that you put in the tray and they spray up on the grinding wheel. Am I correct that you use an aquarium pump with the geyser?

Follow up, what do you think of one if you use it? I have a bucket with hose that is attached to the hood with a valve that drips water on the wheel and then the water drains out of the pan into a bucket.

I am thinking about another change in my wheel setup and would rather add a geyser system than drilling new holes and such.

Bill, Ive seen premade geyser systems in several of the lapiday supply catalogs and they're pretty cheap ( Eloxite has one for about $21.00, Kingsley North has a couple of different types)) so it might be easier just to buy one ready made rather than cobbling one out of an aquarium pump which might cost as much or more.....mel

I'll have to check Kingsley as I have an order to put in this week with them. I was just curious if that is how they work, by pumping air like the aquarium pump. I just don't want to poke more holes in my hood if they work pretty well. If they don't work very well I will go another route. Thanks Mel.

i think they work pretty good bill they get more water on the wheel then my drip set up does on the other grinder -- with the gyser it shoots a spray of water that coats more of the face of the wheel,, drips work fine but i think geyser are just alittle better

Yep, they work well Bill and they do function by using a burst of air through a small hole to make the water geyser. I think though, the water is sucked in from the geyser fixture bottom and drawn along with the burst of air, not pushed by it. At least that's the way it looks to me as the fixture is hollow on the bottom with two inlets for water. Guess the water is sort of vacuumed up and blown out the top? So it's not just like an aquarium pump that just blows air. I agree with Sands. I've used both drip and geyser systems and the geyser coats the wheel somewhat better. Oh, and mine is the system that came on my Genie, others may work differently....mel

I've built one with a standard fountain pump, some tubing, and a chunk of aluminum. It was easy to build, but given it's upkeep, I should have gone with the ones from lapidary suppliers. It clogged now and then, but the thing I disliked the most was having to keep track of the geyser part. It kept moving around and I was always afraid the wheel would suck it up. I went back to the simplicity of a drip system from above. In retrospect, I bet the Kinglsey North ones would probably work good, but I like the overhead tubing just fine.
That's my thought.

Ya, mine is a $5 aquarium with included tubing to a heavy brass billet with 4 holes in it. 1 stragith down the top, center. 1 on the side to except the tubbing, and one on either side were the tubing goes to help pull water into the center. IT works great and i perfer it over an overhead setup. Becasue you still need either a Gavrity feed setup, or a pump to pull the water into an overhead set up. Will cost more in my opinion becasue theres more parts and labor involed in an overhead setup.

Just a quick note- The geyser is a nice system- BUT cleaning of the water pan becomes CRUCIAL between steps!!! If you have ANY courser grit in the pan- its gonna get thrown up on the finer wheels! I like the drip system cause I'm assured that I'm always grinding with frech clean water!
