How effective are the expanding diamond drums for lapidary work? What would they be the most effective for?
If you had to choose between a bench grinder and a good sander with diamond disk and a drum, which would you go for FIRST? I want to make cabs.

I'd go for an 80 grit diamond wheel and one sanding drum. You can sand with a variety of belts all the way to 50,000 grit. You could grind with coarse belts but they would wear out pretty fast. You could still use a spin on polish head with the drum. Polish pads and diamond compound would cost less then diamond belts but not as convenient.
