I've been reading the board for some time... and posting for a month or so....
I've always been an outdoor person, I'd be sitting and looking through piles of rocks and dirt, while other kids were chasing each other. My parents are archaeologists, so we'd go out on hikes or field trips, and I'd always be looking down not for artifacts but for cool rocks.
I have a bachelors and a masters degree in geology, but have only recently come to tumbling. My aunt sent me her old 1.5 lb lortone tumbler probably 12-15 yrs ago. I'm finally in an apt where I can have it going, and not worry about it spilling on the carpet, or keeping me up at night.
I've done a few batches of rocks... quartz, amazonite with nice results... sodalite, with ok results... nothing quite so shiny as many of the pictures I've seen here... so I'm here to learn, that is if one can learn patience.... I have to keep reminding myself that it doesn't do any good to check my tumbler every 5 mins. Although I do wish they made clear tumblers so that I could watch my rocks spinning around!

Hello and welcome! Actually, we do have a member here who tried a transparent window on his tumbler once but it didn't work - or not for long. I can't remember why, maybe it got scratched up and turned opaque? Hopefully he'll see this post and refresh our memory. His avatar used to be his tumbler with the clear window, can't remember if he changed his avatar since.... ... I can't seem to remember anything!
Good to have you aboard, geogoddess!

Just saw his avatar on an old post - "stefan" is the one who put a clear lid on his tumbler once. Look him up under members to see the avatar.

Nice.... I know its probably not practical, and would eventually get scratched up from the grit...but it'd be cool to see what exactly is happening in there without having to open up the barrel.

Actually, that's a great idea!! Not for a rotary tumbler, but it would work on a vibratory tumbler since the rocks never touch the lid.
