I think I've finally finished up the last of my niece's chunks of geode. These were fairly challenging, since the material had gotten cracky from my dad splitting them with a hammer. Before: After: I had to give up on getting this one too perfect. That center kept getting worse the further down I went. SO, I decided to just cut my losses and polish it where it was. My niece is 7, she's going to be thrilled and will never care for a second about the cracks. I was quite pleased with how this one turned out. It's the one on the bottom left of the "before" photo. The other two will probably go through my tumbler. The one in the upper left is way to cracky to work with, and the one in the upper right is extremely thin in the middle and just generally very weirdly shaped.

What a huge difference between the before and after shots! You did a great job..it looks like it was alot of grinding. I'm sure your niece will love them. Steve

The last one is indeed perfectly shaped and polished. How long did it take to smoothen them like that?

Considering what you had to work with they turned out great. Tami

The last one is indeed perfectly shaped and polished. How long did it take to smoothen them like that? Adrian It took me about an hour each to finish them. The diamond wheels on my cabbing machine made grinding pretty easy...probably 10 or 15 minutes of rough grinding per piece to shape them up. Thanks all for the comments. I know my niece is going to be thrilled. I'm hoping that I can get her interested in rocks and have someone to pass my love of them on to.

Great job on those. That last one is really pretty, not to mention darn shiny.
