Hello Everyone, I hope to make my own expanding drums from turned plywood. The problems begin when one looks for a suitable rubber for encasing the drum. I found a lapidary at Grants Pass, Oregon, who makes a drum encased in what he calls... High Impact Rubber! www.hopperlapidary.com/ultimategrinder.htmCan any member please help... What is High Impact Rubber? Many thanks, Derek Hall

For that application, you basically want any kind of relatively high wear rubber. So, not an especially soft rubber, like eraser rubber. A neoprene rubber for making gaskets or such out of would work well. You'll need a relatively thick sheet of it, probably at least 1/4".

You should study an expanding drum. The Rayspans expand while turning to hold the belt tight. The Exact Span has to aluminum centers that exand a rubber belt when tightened. If you are going to line a wooden wheel with rubber and slide a belt on it will have to fit really tight. You may be able to glue a belt on with 3M feathering disc adhesive.

The rubber is orange coloured. That looks like silicone rubber. It can be vulcanized in a standard oven if you can find a way to put pressure on it. It will need 350* per 1/4" thickness. Don't know how to make it expand with rpms though.
