On our trip yesterday, I showed James the little box canyon that Zak and I found on the previous trip. Now YOU get to see, too!
From the wash, this is what I initially saw that made me go "Hmmmmm":
This is a shot inside of the narrow crevice leading to our little area:
These are shots of the big slab of quartz I found in the crevice:
Once you pass through the crevice, all of a sudden you're in the little box canyon, about the size of a living room, and this is a shot of what you see when you first enter. In the center of the pic, at the back of the area, you see a little indentation. A person can sit in there, and rocks have been placed in there to give a flat seat, as well as rocks being wedged overhead, which provide shade in there. It looks sort of like a "natural throne". On the left side of the pic, you can see the sloping hillside, sort of like seating for this little natural amphitheatre. To James, Zak, and I, it looks like this area was possibly "groomed" a little bit, very long ago, and was maybe used as a sort of meeting area. We've found no artifacts, no sign of a fire ever having been made there, and no definate signs of human presence there, but as I said, it does look as if people probably "arranged" rocks there at some point. If so, my guess would be Native Americans, given the minimal disruption of nature.
Here's a little closer shot of "the throne":
There's clear evidence that this area was either once underwater or that there's been a LOT of water which has passed through here over the years. The little canyon's walls are riddled with little caves, like a bobcat habitrail LOL:
We're thinking about re-grooming" the little area, just for fun, to see what it may have looked like when others did it, if our suspicions are correct. It might be a cool place to camp ... bring some acoustic guitars and food that doesn't have to be cooked.
Thanks for looking. Hope you enjoyed it.
