A few weeks ago we went on a field trip with the rock club to collect fossils. I don't know squat about fossils, though I'd like to learn, and it was a nice day, so.... But of course I always get distracted by looking for pretty rocks. Anyhow, on the way home we stopped at a place I've collected before and picked up a bunch of rocks. Mostly I was looking for anything mozarkite-looking. This end of the state isn't a mozarkite area, but they say it pops up here and there & I once saw a map indicating there's a small deposit someplace not far south of STL. Just now I had a chance to go outside and whack on some of my rocks, especially this one humongous one I pulled out of the creek that looked cool on the outside. Once I cracked into it, WOW! I'd say with some certainty that it is in fact mozarkite. I'd say that this is my best ever local find. I didn't hammer many of the others, but there are more that have outside coloration suggesting they may also be mozarkite. The 4th photo below is of a different rock--as yet unbroken. The first one was bigger than a bowling ball. LOL -- when I dragged it out of the creek bed and had to lug it to the car -- wading in February -- along with my rock bags, I was having second thoughts. Now I am glad I toughed it out.

Nice finds. That water must have been freezing.

LOL Daniel, you've watched me in action!
Regarding the wading, I had on pretty hefty hiking boots at the time. I did end up with wet feet, but it wasn't as cold as I expected it to be.

I love that darker coloring on the mozarkite! Most of what I've seen has been really pale stuff, but that's a great piece.

Yikes, I was in Missouri in February while in the army. You are one hard core hound but you did good on those finds for sure!....Mel

Very nice colors. They will make very nice tumbled rocks or cabs.
