Nice job! Maybe staple/glue a piece of velvet/fleece/felt inside of the lid for a classy touch, too!
Tell your wife you expect her to come home with it empty!
Better yet - make a lid out of plexiglas, so when she carries it around EVERYONE will see them and want one (or two, or three)!

yeh, i'd definetly line the top with felt or something to keep the stones from rubbing against the wood and/or each other too badly. or maybe just a thin layer of foam to go between the stones and the top. great idea, Randy! maybe you should reserve on spot for chains....DIY pendants.
