Here is a piece of Davis Creek obsidian that I polished the face on. While I was outside photographing the obsidian I turned the camera to our fully blooming rose bush. Thanks for looking. Bob

Beautiful obsidian and roses! Is that polished surface flat or does it have some ripples on it? It seems so, but I doubt about that.

Adrian The piece is polished flat. The ripples are in the color pattern and they move as you rock the piece in the light. Bob

Beautiful polished obsidian, looks like little feathers trapped inside. Great roses too. Mine are going to take awhile. -Don

That's a really beautiful piece of obsidian, I've never seen those patterns before.

Bobby that is a gorgeous piece of obsidian. I love your roses but you weren't just trying to give Don (rollingstone) a "jab" were ya? What variety are the roses?

Both are beautiful! Wow, I don't think I've ever seen so many roses on one bush! You've got the green thumb, in addition to your lapidary talents.
Gorgeous obsidian. I didn't know it could do that ripple thing, either. How did you polish it?

connrock I haven't a clue what variety the rose is. I picked the start of it up at a parking lot flea market about 15 years ago for $5. and the seller didn't know either. My wife and I have been fretting over this rose bush because we are going to be moving in a few weeks. We contemplated moving it but decided against it because it is so well established. We started growing some starts from it last fall and I just planted them at our new house about two weeks ago. So far the little ones are doing OK and we are keeping our fingers crossed! Amy I work a lot of Obsidian especially from Davis Creek. There isn't much of this pattern from there but the rainbow stuff is relatively common. I grind it the same as any other material, but I do most of the sanding dry with S/C belts. Prior to polishing I sand dry on a well worn 220 grit. The secret here is to let the belt build up a thick coating of powder and continue sanding until there are no visible scratches. It only takes a few minutes. Then I go to the polish. I use a slow turning (300 rpm) 14" wheel covered with a low pile carpet and Cerium polish. I use this wheel to polish about 95% of my work. Bob

Bobby I had a rose years ago that looked exactly like yours and for the life of me I still can't think of it's name!It had a great aroma though. I have some climbing roses called Don Juan,They look just like the ones some guys buy their wives after they mess up! LOL The guys, that is!They smell OUTSTANDING and are fairly easy to keep under control,,,,,,the roses not the guys!!
