Hey folks! Christa and I headed out a couple weekends ago for a Memorial Day weekend trip to an area near Luna NM. There ended up being a pretty heavy weather system moving in at the same time but we didn't let that stop us from 'getting away from it all'. Just packed a few extra blankets and jackets and away we went.
As we headed out of the valley Friday morning through on and off drizzle, our first stop was a rock shop in Globe. I posted some slabs I picked up from there on the slab/saw board a couple of days ago. Christa picked up a nice labradorite pendant there as well. Outside the shop was a nifty rig tumbling apache tears 24/7 to fill orders all over the world.
From Globe we drove on through the very scenic Salt River Canyon
On the other side of the canyon my trusty old rock-gitter turned 100
Well as we ventured further along our way the drizzle turned to pellets, then to goose feathers, and soon our surroundings looked like this
And the reality of it all sank in as we finally reached the slick muddy dirt road toward our destination.. we were gonna be pitching our tent in the snow.
The system was expected to break up the next day, and the snow around us was melting fairly fast, we had brought dry firewood with us, and to top it off a quick walk around showed nice blue agate exposed here and there
The first night was a little uncomfortable. We did have a roaring fire and brought plenty of blankets, but our air mattress sprung a leak in the middle of the night and we ended up sleeping on the cold bumpy ground Luckily it stayed cloudy all night so the temp didn't fall below 36 degrees or so. Next day was windy and cold with flurries, but the snow melted away and the agate hunting was stellar! Sunday morning came along and it was picture perfect.
Of course it was time to pull camp by then and head back, but not before we stopped near Concho AZ and spent a few hours hunting pet wood. All in all we had a great time!
Here is a shot of the pet wood we found, with the Luna agate in the background. I still haven't had the time to clean up the agate but we found some beauties.
This one really got me excited, my very first piece of AZ palm!!
And Luna Blue waiting to be cleaned up and showed off
A couple I did clean up
That's it, thanks a bunch for looking!
