I got the opportunity to go rock hounding with Deb (puppie96) and her husband Joe. We had met before at the Burro Creek rock hunt, so it was good to renew acquaintances. First we met up at the Mackay mining district, where we picked through the tailings for about an hour. Got some OK stuff. Then we headed north to Road Creek and went to the "secret spot", we picked agates until we got kind of rummy. We were all so busy hauling rocks to the truck, that we forgot to take any pictures. Needless to say, we all found our 25 pounds worth. Next it was off to Challis where we stayed at a cool bed and breakfast owned by a friend of mine, who just so happens to have a house in prime rock hunting country. We hunted rocks on her property Monday morning, and we found a wide assortment of different colors. Here is Deb and Joe as we were loading up their car for the return trip. The mess in the back of my pickup. Deb found a petrified log, and we tried to get it out in one piece, but it came out in 3 large chunks and a whole bunch of little pieces. I got to keep one of the chunks. Here is my pitiful attempt at photographing it. after I got it home and washed it On my way home, I drove through Stanley to see if the salmon fishing was any good yet. Here is a picture taken out of my pickup of the snow still on the peaks. After I got home from work tonight I had to put a chunk in the saw, here is the heel cut off of the first piece I cut from this weekend. Deb and Joe, thanks for hollerin at me to go rock hunting with you. I had a blast!! Tony

Nothin' better than reading about rockhounding trips with friends from the ole' RTH! looks like you guys found some ROCKS! and if the piece you cut tonight, indicates what you found...I think you found some awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing. Utah's rivers are still high and flwoing dirty. I was hoping maybe by the 4th of July I could do some flyfishing...but it doesn't look like it. Steve

Great pics Tony! Looks like you had a super trip. Sharri and I have been sticking close to home while we deal with some financial crap, but we should be out picking up some rocks and taking some pics of our own soon. Meanwhile I'm glad there are so many RTHers like you willing to share their own trips with us. That last pic of the wood is fantastic!

Man what a great sight! I tell ya, seeing Deb and Joe and your truck made me think of how rock collecting back in November was so much fun. It brought me right back there. It's nice to see your truck full of rocks too. That's one nice looking peice of pet wood! Glad you had a good time and got lots of cool rocks. Steve

I don't know what happened! I posted a reply last night...we have continued to travel and no internet connections most of the time, but last night late I had a decent connection and actually wrote a reply and it is GONE which is totally frustrating. Now we drove a lot today and we are really tired, but what I was trying to say was that this was a GREAT trip, Tony was the greatest guide and took us to places that boggled my mind. Finding the log was the find of a lifetime for me; as much as I've looked for pet wood I have never come close to finding a whole LOG, and Tony didn't even mention that he found an even bigger log just a few minutes before this! I have to get some photos gone, quick!
I have lots to tell about this great trip, and I haven't even begun to sort things out and wash them off. This was the greatest collecting experience I've ever had for a zillion reasons. Of course also on our itinerary we were hitting other sites coming and going, in Wyoming, South Dakota, and a little bit of Nebraska and Montana. The car was suffering.

Lots of rock is always nice on hunts. Tony, is that piece from your friends property?

LOL, I can just see Deb and Joe pulling into their driveway with the bumper dragging on the ground and a tail pipe hanging loose behind the car!! The car was looking pretty loaded when it left Challis, I can imagine what it looks like now.
Daniel, yes that piece came from my friend's property, so did the log.
